Hail, high Excess — especially in wine,2009 Update: The sins for which we lack time or resources.
To thee in worship do I bend the knee
Who preach abstemiousness unto me —
My skull thy pulpit, as my paunch thy shrine.
Precept on precept, aye, and line on line,
Could ne'er persuade so sweetly to agree
With reason as thy touch, exact and free,
Upon my forehead and along my spine.
At thy command eschewing pleasure's cup,
With the hot grape I warm no more my wit;
When on thy stool of penitence I sit
I'm quite converted, for I can't get up.
Ungrateful he who afterward would falter
To make new sacrifices at thine altar!
Redefining misanthropy for a fresh generation. Standard posts begin with a definition from Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary followed by a modern adjustment. Miscellany on Wednesday and storytelling on Saturday.

Bravo Bierce. Keats couldn't have said it better ; )
Here's wishing more time and resources for you, RBUD.
excess, n. the ability to maintain a blog
The only downside of getting a lot of treats and food is that you have to spend so much more time outside in that freezing snow pooping so much.
Refers to weight.
Ha, ha, good update, Doug.
Excess: Over and above the norm - it's the way I eat when going to Chandra or any other tasty dining place. I try to keep eating to a normal level when at home, but sometimes excesses do crop up there too, also, as well.
EXCESS, n. The contents of the excesspool, Icy.
Excess: the amount of Hail Mary's said after confession. Oh, the pain of penitence.
Excess: That's what they called a large part of my baggage on the going part of my flight.
2009 Update: There wasn't any excess baggage charge coming this way on the Special Air Mission 28000 (former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura returned home to Texas).
I should have hitched a ride.
..
That has got to be difficult for a dog.
Like the definition if only it weren't the case.
On second thought it is probably a good thing.
EXCESS i.
just about the right amount (I'm an American, what did you expect?)
Excess: compound interest on a credit card.
Thanks, Hobbes. I work in what I can.
Absolutely, Minka, but are you sure that isn't the envy talking?
Icy, California dogs love going outside.
Whose, TLP?
JD, it is not your fault if there are truffles at home. They have a genetic predisposition to your mouth.
Amoeba, you might have at least a 50% hit rate with puns. Extraordinary and excessive.
Sauerkraut, it isn't so bad in the context of the prostitutes you've murdered.
Jim, I'd have liked to have been on that plane. You suppose they play Euchre?
Actonbell, you get number 3.
Cooper, the crushing poverty of my youth, I'm very sure, enabled the bitter acerbity of my middle age.
One too few, Quilly? We're mostly Americans here. We understand.
Usury is one of my favorite excesses, Indie, being contractual and by consent.
