Oblivion

Oblivion, n. The state or condition in which the wicked cease from struggling and the dreary are at rest. Fame's eternal dumping ground. Cold storage for high hopes. A place where ambitious authors meet their works without pride and their betters without envy. A dormitory without an alarm clock.

2006 Update: The destination of a journey filled with learning, anticipation and wonder. See Morning.

I know it is no competition, but we all know it is. I was actually lurking here, waiting for your post to appear! And that rhymes.

  2. You could say I was so eager in my pursuit of winning first comment, that I was entirely oblivious to your post in the first palce.

    But no more!

A friend gave me a book by Kahil Gibran after I broke up with my boyfriend. And I love it so much. Here is a quote from that very book:

"We were a silent, hidden thought in the folds of oblivion, and we have become a voice that causes the heavens to tremble."

  6. I have a series of compliation CDs titled Living In Oblivion: The 80's Greatest Hits.

    Precisely.

  7. Minka, is that from Madman? I love Gibran. He's kind of the anti-Bierce. Speaking of books, Amazon says I can't have The Wyrd Sisters so I'm trying another Pratchett novel.

Karma, one would do for me anywhere. An Indian table dance sounds like an exotic thing.

    How's that, Indie?

    Sar, that's a perfect title.

  8. Oblivion. 1. Where I do most of my writing work and therefore I reply to questions with answers that make absolutely no sense. 2. Where some other people are when they listen to my answers, and so they walk away thinking I'm highly intelligent because they didn't understand a single word that I said.

Oblivion, n. That state to which many beings in the other lower 48 aspire to migrate, and spend large sums to recreate and enjoy in their present physical location.

  13. Liz, the Delphic path to respect is one I know well. Did you notice your friend, Kelley, below?

Cooper, I can't tell. Seems nice. Have a nice trip?

Pia, enjoy your Friday! Haha, I'm having the same thought about our beloved Alice. This is turning into a true Midwestern farewell.

Brother Armen! I'm well thanks and hope the same for you. Isn't it early for politics? I was thinking June.

I forget how large a sum, Duxfine. Remind me?

  14. Oh I love Gibran too.

Oblivion-I am helpless against oblivion's pull when ever I lay down with one of my children. Some magical chemistry happens in my head and I slip into oblivion, lulled by they snuffling snores.

    ReplyDelete
  15. of course, that is 'their' snuffling snores. tsk. ;-)

HAHAHAHAHA, Dddragon. I would keep an Anywhere Chair between mine if it weren't so dark.

Or reading the Klonopin package, Mireille.

  19. Some collect knowledge, save money, achieve power or gain fame; but it all seems to end in oblivion.

  21. Wow, Cowgirl. Deep!

Icy, if you've never read Twain's The Five Boons see if you can't find it.

Armen, you take it with your eggs, don't you?

  24. Armen, I ought to scold you for putting an inside joke out, but I pretty near split a seam laughing at that.

Phoenix, nice twist. Might have been Butch Cassidy's last words, too.

  25. ddd and I were of the same "mind" on this.

Oblivion: The inside of my head.

I like this word. It's fun to say.

  29. Oblivion... where Bush needs to be blown into... hey, Armen started it! And yeah baby yeah! I have mailed off my request to get my absentee ballots sent to me for the primaries! I... AM... EXCITED! I told Lil' B all about voting and she is excited too! Call me crazy but hey, what's new!

Where were we? Oh right! Oblivion! Did I mention Bush already?

    ReplyDelete

Hey I just put it out there.
Then again - Im way too cynical to think absentee ballots or primaries, or yes ill say it, a change in parties will make a darn bit of differance.

Which makes me think ...we have two parties in this country ???
I think that would be a good idea ...two parties

But what do I know im just a crazy canuck

  31. oblivion is not a destination but a beginning. amen.

  32. Where I feel like I've been because this damn job keeps getting in the way of important things like getting my daily dose of Bitter Bierce.

    Sigh!

  33. Cowgirl, a few good snorts should make you forget all about the song and the word for the day.

I agree Jamie Dawn. And doesn't it go great with "Blessed?"

Man, Rio. Oblivion and Nimbyism are matter and antimatter. Scary.

Sar, do you have doggie treats?

Mix B, to whom do your refer?

So, my Canadian cousin, you want two parties and no voting? That's practically European.

That's beautiful, Ariel. I almost want to take mine down now.

Poobah, what are you doing working? Is Omnipotence worth nothing anymore?

Actually, Actonbell, I think it's even better for those around you.

  34. Oh my God, you are goign to read a Pratchett book? I am so excited. New realms of pleasure! If you can´t get Wyrd Sisters, get Equal Rites!!! Very funny indeed and you get to meet Granny Weatherwax!

    "I would swallow my pride
I would choke on the rind
but the lack thereof would leave me empty inside,
    swallow my doubt
    turn it inside out
find nothing but faith in nothing
want to put my tender heart in a blender
watch it spin around to a beautiful oblivion
rendezvous, then I'm through with you "

  38. Pull up a barstool, Cowirl. One geritol and metamucil cocktail coming right up!

I am, Minka. I think I got The Lost Continent. How's that one?

Anonymous, welcome back! I prefer to think of it as Avoiding Entrapment.

Logo, I think Cowgirl already sang it.

ap3, early this morning if they're really Irish.

  39. Bugger...not the best of choices in my view. But I am sure you´ll enjoy it! You definately have to let me know what you think! And it takes a little time to get used to...give it a chance, please! I feel like a priest trying to convert people to a particular religion :)

  40. Minka, I promise if I don't like it to give Pratchett another shot of your selection.

Kyah: It's also "lie" down with your children. But I'm too late, so you will probably remain oblivious to the distinction between transitive "lay" and intransitive "lie."

A staging area for nightmares too horrible, dreams too dear, revolutions too advanced, lust too unrealistic and other temporarily unrealizable excess. It is often confused with a grave.
