Gametime

In ought-six, when I went on vacation, I left a game for you to play while I was gone. As before, I will leave you with one and, as before, you can feel free to make up your own, if you like.

This year's game is Designing Pia.

As some of you know, Pia, a friend of this blog since day one, is trying to sell her condo in Manhattan and move to South Carolina.  The process of fixing up the condo using New York contractors is apparently so maddening she can barely blog, so I though we could help with the other end.  In the comments section below, the first person can design Pia's Myrtle Beach floor plan, the next person can change the upholstery, move the furniture repaint rooms, move walls, etc.

68 comments:

  1. Pia, I see you in an open loft space, floor to ceiling windows, lots of cornice molding and hardwood floors. hth.

Doug, I see you celebrating Ogre's Day on my blog. xoxo

Doug I came to see what bitter Valentines Day whatever you had and instead....
Thank you, you don't know how much this brightened up my week

It's a coop--w're up to the interviewing realtors stage--so we can start the sale process and get out of this city that has been so hard this year we no longer love it

    Coops make everything much harder

We--me and Toto who might even become real are planning to buy a townhouse for the thrill of walking up and down steps--I know strange thrill

But Mirelle you are right---here it would be an open loft exactly as described

Doug, my golden Dawg--you are too much :)

  3. Okay, I see a pink striped couch, with a thin mint green line in it too. That's in the living room which has big windows. She also has a big game room with emerald-green and white colors to go with the water and beach colors. She's near a golf course as well as the water. The place is charming, but of course not at all pretentious.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Holy crap! I forgot to mention that the place comes with a cabaña boy! At least one, and several on-call for friends, like say, me, who visit.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Wow, Doug, it's a girls' game. Yay for Pia! Hope she's going to love the result. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  6. Perhaps, Pia, you could have a BOY'S ROOM someplace. Toto would love this. As well as for use by future mates. Mrs. Jim allows me to have one.

  7. I just came by to wish you, one and all, but especially you Doug, a very happy and hallowed Ogre's Day Eve.

Pia needs windows, LOTS of windows.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Kyah must do the curtains.

  9. Moving south!! Hooray!! That's a great move to make! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Georgia and South Carolina. They are my FAVORITE states!!!!

Pia, be sure you have chocolate on hand at ALL times. This will make your move less stressful.
They play lots of golf in Myrtle Beach.

Doug: Happy Valentine's Day!!!! or Ogre's Day or Feb 14th Day or whatever.

  10. happy V-day, Douglas...
    your brain
    makes my heart
    get all fluttery...

This is a big cultural move. my knowledge of golf ends with the fact that most courses have 18 holes. Until recently I made fun of golfers

Never pretentious TLP--lots of chocolate--all bitter or at least dark with Mexican spices--I'm weird that way

    Yes a cabana boy

And lots and lots of windows. But I don't think they have big windows there

I have big windows and incredible light here. a part of me is thinking...but I must leave. My sister wants to me to live in Cambridge where I lived during college--but it's pricey and cold

What's a girl who wants everything to do?

  12. I don't want to have to move any furniture.

A small yet roomy L corner office for writing, somewhere she will not be tempted to look out the window and daydream. A few pictures, nothing nostalgia producing in the office area it cuts production by at least eighty-percent. A shade of pink more conducive to thought would be good here. I'm not sure if that is a whiter shade of pale pink or a pinker shade of white but something like that.

  13. I had no idea Pia was moving to South Carolina. *quickly checks map* I have a quarter from that State :) which brings me to my first absolutely vital thing to have: a jar filled with quarters and nickels and dimes for a dry day.

A nice little office for her writing, huge writing desk, clean surfaces...big window where the sun can touch her face, beautiful antique book shelves on one wall up to the ceiling, a tiny table in a corner that always has fresh flowers on it. (it's ok if a cabana boy stands right next to it, ready to take orders!)

I have to think this through...

    ReplyDelete
  14. how about a rocking chair?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Rocking chairs are always good! I'd love for you to have an Eames rocker myself which may be just a teensy bit of projection on my part. The top floor of that townshouse will actually be your loft space with the huge windows opening to ocean views that may or may not have been mentioned above. Of course a part of it will have the lovely writing desk - I'm picturing a gorgeous white lacquered number (could even be antique painted over to honor the Cancerian need for something old and comforting nearby).

Downstairs will have a beautiful fireplace for the cooler months near the water...Of course the cabana boy will then be on hand to keep the fires stoking :)

  16. I am a woman who likes familiarity and keeping a schedule of sorts. Visiting here to discuss a word each weekday has become part of my life.
So, I will stop by here and provide the word myself, and then comment on it. This way my life is not thrown out of whack simply because you had to take an inspiration vacation.

    Word for the day: Giddy

Giddy: Me if I were to inherit a chocolate factory.

I hope your blog vacation is filled with giddy moments.

Pia's place needs a mementos room. Perhaps it's the one with the fireplace in it, perhaps it's adjacent. A Teddy Roosevelt would have called it a trophy room. But I presume you'd rather not sacrifice a wall to mounted heads. Unless it's Rudy Giuliani's. Instead:

A parking meter. It needs a quarter every fifteen minutes, or a cop comes and plants a ticket on your living room window.

A snow globe. The scene is a New York skyscape in the background; in the foreground, a taxi pulled up to a parking meter (vide supra). Every time it's shaken, a snow emergency shuts down Manhattan. A great Fourth of July amusement.

And above all: a display case full of New York minutes. To be shown with pride to all those in your new neighborhood to whom "rush" means "next year sometime, maybe".

(I tried this here in Hawai‘i. A few weeks later, I found a box on my doorstep. It was filled with "This ain't the mainland" bumper stickers." Signed by the bureaucrats of the University of Hawai‘i. It wasn't funny then; it's a lot less so now.)

GIDDY: The unfortunate consequence of Paul Harvey trying to deliver the signature signoff to his radio show with an Australian accent.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Pia would need a canary and few finches in a bright corner to provide the room with cheerful life all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Uh terry, that's good...I was thinking of bird long when I pictured her in her rocking chair, next to teh big window, next to the flowers (optional cabana boy)...for some reason i see Emily Dickinson in front of my eyes, why is that?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Anonymous6:29 PM

OC: giddy is what I'll be come 1-20-09.

Giddy is what Pia will be when she moves out of NYC.

I see her in something cape coddish, with an open floor plan with everything but the puter room separated by bamboo curtains, and walls consisting of 8' x 8' Pella window walls of the finest vinyl. The floors will be fine-grain sugar maple of a natural hue, matched to the cathedral ceilings criss-crossed with lighter-colored poplar beams that will allow the light to reflect and deflect just so.

Pia's puter room will be wainscotted in white gloss, with enough wall shelving to hold all her memories.

Oh... suppose we'd better put some walls around that bathroom, too. Wouldn't want too much of a view to interrupt the reading.

If Pia can find some skilled amishmen, the shanty shall be completed with a minimum of fuss and at a very nice price. It will last forever, or at least as long as Pia doesn't rent it out to college students.

    meow.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anonymous8:48 AM

Pia's giddy already--way too giddy as she found realtors who found her Manhattan coop unique, perfect and pristine

She's used to unique. But perfect and pristine? She has spent the past day wondering what they were smoking before coming here

Nobody has to move any furniture. According to Pia's friends that's why God invented movers and "people" who do stuff

She will digest all your suggestions and let you know Monday

Amoeba--Pia used to collect snow globes--and her best girl friend made her a picture of Manhattan in a snow globe she will never part with

  23. Did someone give you carpets? You need sand-colored carpet. Trust me.

    ReplyDelete
  24. My word for the weekend is "fierce."

Pia needs some FIERCE paintings and FIERCE color schemes in her new place. I've been watching some episodes of Project Runway and the word FIERCE is very in right now in the trendy world of fashion. Even Tyra Banks uses this word. As long as Pia does some FIERCE stuff, she will be.... uh... FIERCE.

    Happy Weekend!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. okay, okay, what's a person got to do
to leave a comment in this literary maze...

    FIERCE: rhymes with BIERCE

    (i'm so cool.)

oh right we have to play DP too:
okay, how about a live jazz quartet
    in her living room...

    there, i played.

but really i just wanted to say
    i miss Dog already... xo

    ReplyDelete
  26. It rocks! Pia, if you don't like it, we happily move in. ;-)

I put window frames on your walls, and insert pictures of your dream lands in them. When you want to see the real world you can look out of the real windows, and when you want to think you are somewhere else, you can look out of the dream windows.

What lands would you like to have?

    ReplyDelete
  27. wait - before I read on...South Carolina! Pia! A fine choice. Yep, a fine choice.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Anonymous7:15 AM

Fierce--yes it will be fierce--I want it to look like fierce sunsets. fierce Bierce whatever

I just signed with a realtor to unload uh sell this apartment--and should be in South Carolina next week

My friend's duplex that I stay at does have sand colored wall to wall

My dream lands are the ocean--but I don't want to live on it--too built up--and then pastoral hills and ponds--and the desert for its raw beauty and my sinuses

I think a lemony, light blue, light green--some pink scheme. Duplexes and houses in Myrtle don't seem to have huge windows but I will find one....

    ReplyDelete
  29. My word for Monday: Daffodil

    Daffodil: a sign of hope

    Come on spring!!!!

I'm planting daffodils in Pia's window boxes and putting daffodil paintings on her walls. Yellow is such a happy color!

    :-)
    Happy Monday!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anonymous11:10 AM

Duplexes and houses in Myrtle don't seem to have huge windows

Methinks they've had too many fundamental disagreements with hurricanes to stick around ...

I wouldn't be surprised to find that the word on daffodils in Myrtle Beach is already "wait 'til next year".

You're giving Pia a van Gogh, JD? You're holding out on us ...

    ReplyDelete
  31. Pia, you are going to have all. :-)

    Van Gogh yay!

Pia, are you going to have any pets?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I don't know anything about architecture or decor, but my friend Porux the Kougra says that you will be very happy if you paint your walls in Fairy Camo and if you have a game room where the walls are made of bouncy jelly.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yesiree! A Van Gogh for Pia!!!

    My word today is "sopa."

I made sopa today... sopa con pollo, papas, zanahorias, & maiz.

Pia only needs a crock pot of soup for her new home to feel (and smell ) like home. She shall have some of my sopa deliciosa in her new abode.
Yum Yum for the Tum Tum.

    :-)

    ReplyDelete
  34. How much longer 'til that dawg comes back????
    Dang! I miss him!

Okay Pia, I think your new place should be three story 'cause you like steps. That also gives you blank walls on which to hang pictures and stuff. Fun.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Has it been two weeks yet?

Pia, I think a loft should be tucked in somewhere - it always adds class with vaulted ceilings and candlelight - with a beautiful skylight on the top to open your home to the sun and the stars.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Word for today: Bi Polar.

    Bi Polar: Arkansas weather

I'm giving Pia perfect SC weather at all times.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anonymous9:20 PM

Having read through all the comments, I do believe Pia's house warming gift from me should be more practical. How about a storage shed in which to sort all of your new possessions? After you've put your house together and the shed is empty, you'll have somewhere to store the garden implements.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Okay, where's Sar? We've reached the B-O-R-I-N-G stage. Time for a real party!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Anonymous8:36 AM

noooo to a shed. don't clutter the yard with a shed. either get a house with a basement or a good attic space. and once you get rid of all that new stuff, turn the attic space into a handy secret hidy spot.

btw, cats make excellent pets. the independence of the little critters works well. and ya don't have to spend all that time walking the critter for its daily poops. just clean the litter box or fill out outside 3' x 3' area with sand.

    meow.

    bi-polar: today's politicians.

today's word verifier: uhfils. what you tell the cat to do with that litter box.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Anonymous10:21 AM

    Bi-polar--chic to be.

North Mrytle Beach and I assume Myrtle Beach hasn't had a real hurricane since 59--something about where it falls

    Where oh where is Doug?

My apartment will probably be on the market next week and I will be in Myrtle then--finally

    ReplyDelete
  41. TLP, real party you don't mean one starts with getting drunk, do you? Yeah, I thought so...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Normally I don't drink alcoholic beverages, but coming up with my own word for each day has been tough.
    Pass the booze, please.

    Word for the day: Drunk

    (hiccup!)
    Necesito un baño, ahora!

  43. Ariel is bringing the Absinthe.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh Terry, and what am I going to say to Doug when he comes back and wants to know what all these dead bloggers are doing in his living room?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Anonymous2:03 PM

Dead, Ariel, or merely exhausted? After all, everybody knows that absinthe makes the heart go wander.

    ;)

    ReplyDelete
  46. My word for today is "Mediterranean."

Mediterranean decor is mi favorito of all types of decor. I love Old World style, so I am adding some gorgeous floor tiles in Pia's new place and some columns in her living room and a big armoire for her bedroom and a couple of fountains in her home to make it feel like a spa.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Jamie Dawn, you remind me, I have seen the most beautiful stairs on this blog, The Shocker, I'd happily make them for Pia.

I figure it means I'll have to travel to far away places to get those tiles, and I'll need people to come with me. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Anonymous7:54 PM

    Doug who?

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm going with you, Ariel, and Actonbell too.
We can find lots of great stuff for Pia on our trip.

Quilly is talking about some Doug guy that none of us even knows.
I think she's off her rocker a bit.
    :-)

    I don't even know why I'm here???
I guess I'm off my rocker too.
    Maybe I'll remember tomorrow...
Nighty night, sleep tight, and all that jazz!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Ariel - you had the best taste ever. The beautiful mosaic stairs you found on my sister Julee's are the prettiest anywhere. I'm signing up right now to get on the travel list... when do we leave? Top idea - Pia won't be disappointed.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Let's leave right now! Meeting in Rick's cafe, midnight.

    ReplyDelete
  52. You mean in Casablanca?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yes! Hurry, pack! It's going to be the best journey ever.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Ahhhhh...Casablanca.

My word for today is "chocolate."

Chocolate is on my mind. It is in my heart and soul, and if it were running for President, it would get my vote.

Happy Monday to all! Have a chocolate truffle!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Louie (our pup) is named after the last scene in Casablanca, well one of the characters. My in-laws named him, but it stuck.

Wait - are we going somewhere? With Pia? Let me get ready!

    ReplyDelete
  56. home is where the chocolate is...

    ps Doug?
    i hope you're having
    a wonderous vacate.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Doug? What's he look like? Anybody remember who he is and how we came to know him?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Pia comes with us to choose the tiles of course. Or maybe she's already there...

    ReplyDelete
  59. Oh come on! Time's up. Isn't it?????

Where oh where is Dougie dawg?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Oh goodie! I just heard his doggie nails clicking on the floor. He's just around the corner. Nice doggie.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Anonymous7:07 AM

    Sorry, Pia, I'm no designer.

So you're back, Doug? (*taps foot*).

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'm there actonbell; show me the chocolate!!

Chocolate is still on my mind, but I have a new word for today. It is "molehills."

Molehills: These are what my son makes mountains out of.

I do NOT want Pia to have any molehills.

    ReplyDelete
  63. When's the dude coming back? Two weeks must be over by now...*tries to recount her fingers again*
    We sorta miss you!

  66. Pia, your place looks good!

  67. Magnificent work, all of you. It was fun watching this all happen, and amusing that it seems to have been some of the most literate among you who couldn't read the sign stating "until February 28."

    ReplyDelete
  68. "Sign, sign, everywhere a sign

If I were literate I'd be very embarrassed. So I'm not.
