Turkey

TURKEY, n. A large bird whose flesh when eaten on certain religious anniversaries has the peculiar property of attesting piety and gratitude. Incidentally, it is pretty good eating.

2009 Update: A creature that, by domestication, caging and overfeeding has evolved from a wild fowl into a symbol for American gratitude and ambition. The turkey retains enough power of flight to avoid a "flightless" description but not enough to avoid a recipe.

Happy Thanksgiving to all Americans, foreign and domestic.

  3. TURKEY, n. A dietary source of tryptophan - which is how come so many football fans trip over their own feet on the way to the couch, where they'll pass out in front of the television.

Happy Merry Thanksgivoween (second leg). No thanks, I haven't finished the first one yet.

  5. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you, and especially to Doug.

We could eat turkey any day of the year now. But for some reason most of us don't. But on Thanksgiving, it is so wonderful!

  10. A recipe, Karen? Once the Turkey Hash makes it to leftovers it's pretty much dead, isn't it?

I leave you to enjoy your Thanksgiving with a quote from my nephew, now grown (but only by the grace of God) who, at 6 years old, while eating at my sister's Thanksgiving table quite happily piped, "Gee, Auntie Jackie, you make Turkey almost as good as the school cafeteria!"

  12. Thank you, Nessa and Jim. I hope you had a good feast. Jim, someone or other made chocolate cream pie. I'm thankful for whoever that was.

Amoeba, you're the scientist here but my understanding is that tryptophan cooks out. We sleep in front of the football game because we're lazy, overfed football fans.

Thanks, Jenn. You too on that last part.

I agree, TLP. I was just wondering why I don't bake a turkey now and then. Thank you and I hope your Thanksgiving was worthy of the family.

Right back at you, Thom Turkey.

Thank you, JJ! Kind of you to think of us on a south-of-the-border holiday. I'm not surprised.

    Amen, Ariel!

Karen, I need directions for getting off the couch.

Quilly, it's turkey until it's gone. That is a perfect story. You're not the only weisenheimer in the family, then.

    Happy holiday, Bear.

Thanks, Actonbell. I hope so too.

  14. Good update.
All year long "turkey" is an insult, but on Thanksgiving it becomes, as Bierce points out, a revered symbol.
