REVERENCE, n. The spiritual attitude of a man to a god and a dog to a man.
2006 Update: A suspension of cynicism. Chewing quietly while another orates.
By the way, our friend Sar just couldn't help herself and interrupted her blogging vacation for a post about commemorating the World Trade Center and cetera. Those whom today's date inspires to piety may not want to read it, or spend much time with me today, either.
and humbly she utters "I arrived in time, bless *insert deity here*!"
ReplyDeleteWhile I cannot suspend my cynicism, I can chew quietly, and tiptoe out.
ReplyDeletereverence - people give it to someone when they don't know them, and take it back when they get to know them.
ReplyDeleteAriel
amen to that Ariel. Sometimes, those to whom reverence is owed sometimes prove otherwise, as time goes on.
ReplyDeleteSteve Pascover
Minka, go in peace, serve *insert deity*
ReplyDeleteTLP, reverent enough for me.
Ariel, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house" (Mt 13:58). You've shown us your feet so you can probably forget about alienating anyone else.
So it is with fathers and sons, huh, Pop?
Brian, bless you.
Reverence: to revere, as in Revere MA. North shore community and home to some of the biggest hair outside of Texas.
ReplyDeleteReverence isn't ever really just that, there is always a hidden motive. It is only given when it is in the best interest of the one giving reverence. In the words of Captian Jack Sparrow, it is given at the "opportune moment"
ReplyDeletereverence n. the knowledge that some things are bigger than we are
ReplyDeletereverence v. an emotion that, when exhibited toward another mortal, soon leaves us feeling foolish and betrayed
REVERENCE, n. See GOLDEN RULE ("The one who has the gold ...").
ReplyDeleteSign on your boss's desk, placed there as a reminder.
LOL!!! @OC
ReplyDeletehope not
ReplyDeletepops
reverence: abdication of self-worth and/or acknowledgement that maybe you're *not* "all that and a bag of chips", after all; the process of setting someone up for failure [see also: shaky pedestals]
ReplyDeleteI thought it might be safe to drop by while you were still chewing quietly. Surely, you have reverance for something Doug - that cynicism will gives one a headache (I should know).
ReplyDeleteMutha, I was pretty sure it was somewhere I hadn't been.
ReplyDeleteSolace, I started reading your comment surprised you felt that way and ended laughing. Thanks.
Quilldancer, if I haven't said so, I sure appreciate your willingness to be reverent. It's refreshing to see when you're me.
O Ceallaigh, where can I get one?
Dad, along with the facts of life, reverence for my parents was a lecture you never gave me. I'm kidding you a little.
But, Puppybrose, you are all that and a bag chips. Aren't you?
G, I have reverence for very few things. It's how I stay sincere.
Anomie, you're right. That's a great quote.
Great definition. Can't beat it so won't try.
ReplyDeleteI'm off the nine eleven merry - go - round.
If I never hear another tribute or reminder it will be too soon.
Doug, stop shaking my pedestal.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope that the history of the past five years teaches SOMEone a lesson.
ReplyDeletewow, inspired to piety...
ReplyDeleteI don't know that there is such a thing for me.
Well, perhaps if the image of Elvis appeared in my morning pastry.
I don't know from reverence. I only ever do irreverant.
ReplyDeleteIs it utterly irreverent to choose this day of all days to return to the Waking Ambrose fold and say "sorry, Sir, the dog ate my homework and that's why i've been away so long?"
(And may I have another?)
=D
Reverence: Something that I am supposed to feel today, but can't
ReplyDeleteWill probably be known as the blogger who stole 9/11 after the prequel to my post, I just put in
Nuke Em All
ReplyDeleteRepublicand and Democrats, and TV Network Executives
Wait, wrong definition..
Sometimes it's good to be silent. xoxo
ReplyDeleteCooper, then I guess it's safe for me to go to your blog today.
ReplyDeletePuppybrose, how else to get you dancing?
Dddragon, I hope more than one of us has learned more from the last five years than we did on the day.
Logo, I believe God had a plan in making me without piety.
Minxie, you've been a very bad girl.
Pia, I'll look forward to reading. Your little bit of jaundice is usually just a good start for me.
V.I. Nucular is just one style of reverence.
Mireille, that's about the time I usually speak up.
Reverence... the eyes through which little sisters view their big brothers...
ReplyDeleteI see you've paid my political brawl reverence in your post addendum, Doug. Good doggie, *pat pat*.
ReplyDeleteNow, will you be paying reverence to the resume of tomorrow's caption contest as well?
sincere respect and honor
ReplyDeleteI am chewing quietly as I read these comments, for this blog is holy ground.
Well lookie there at the time stamp on my comment above!
ReplyDeleteReverence: All hail 47!
a4g, you atheists have the most uncomfortable churches. Except the Episcopalians.
ReplyDeleteHermana, you're the first in my family.
Sar, I almost feel guilty that you're back so soon.
And also with you, Pastor Dawn.
What, Sar? 2:47::4:94. What's the big whup?
reverence - That which seems to be disturbingly absent from the everyday world.
ReplyDeleteREVERENCE, n. The spiritual attitude of a man to a god and a dog to a man
ReplyDelete... or a dog to a woman.
... or a dog to a kid holding an ice cream cone...
ReplyDeletePoobah, you think that because you're omnipotent. I find a little too much of the stuff.
ReplyDeleteOr a curmudgeon to a cur who's running off with a kid's cone, Terry.
reverence:
ReplyDeletethe post facto result of a murder of reverends aka: time to get the car washed...next time don't park so close to the collection plate.
hi Doug, I have got nothing witty to say on reverence....I'm somewhat lacking in this area. However, I can't see the first definition without thinking of a kind of cynical saying around here in the chemical plants. You see, in the mid 90s, some really 'brilliant' managers had the great idea that in the future you wouldn't actually need humans in the productions plants, because the computers could do everything. The saying became....What do you see in the plant of the future? A man and a dog. The man is there to feed the dog and the dog is there to make sure the man doesn't touch anything.
ReplyDeleteI like Terry's 2nd definition...I see that look every day with Casper :-) ( I guess since I'm a woman her first definition fits too!!)
Glad you got a good laugh out of it. I apparently surprise a lot of people, so that's understandable...
ReplyDeleteDoug, I am the youngest of twelve kids. You want to know what real reverence is? Being the first one in the bathroom in the morning. Being allowed a whole piece of gum, a whole popsicle, or a whole can of pop; new clothes; NOT being asked, "Hey aren't you so-and-so's little sister?" And, being adored by 11 other syblings just because you're you.
ReplyDeleteI hear ya. I pretty much was done with 9/11 until I saw the documentary that TLP blogged about today. That kinda got to me.
ReplyDeletecassock that is soutane is "reverenda" in Hungarian. thought you'd want to know.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing we have to revere is Bierce himself.
ReplyDelete(Hey, Im just a kid - thats the best i can do)
First Nations, nothing quite lubricates the humor like a murdered clergy gag, I hear ya.
ReplyDeleteKyah, "Reverence" was never going to be an easy one around here. I liked Terry's definition, too.
Solace, hone that. Serve you well, it will.
A whole piece of gum, Quilly? Reverence is never so profligate!
AP3, I'll have to look for that. I didn't catch the title. "Kerplops and all?"
Ariel, once I googled Cassock I sure did want to know.
Pretty good, SACADA.
