Blue-Stocking

BLUE-STOCKING, n. A woman who for their slight of her personal charms revenges herself upon men by caricaturing science, art, letters or learning.
"They call me a blue-stocking!" madam explained;
"Pray why, of all ladies, should I, sir, be named
From the hue of my stockings, which man never spied?"
"Nor ever desired to," the villain replied."
2010 Update: A Boston baseball fan after the 2005 American League Division Series. Prior to that, a Chicago baseball fan of perennial season-ending poverty virtue.

  1. We have several 'blue stocking' neighborhoods in Houston. That's where the rich people live.
    Especially the oil barons.

  2. Forgot to tell you that we're still in London. Paul McCartney lives around the corner here. This must be a 'blue stocking' neighborhood too.

  3. And in 2005, the Chicago White Sox won the World Series against the Houston Astros in a four-game sweep. The ChiSox hadn't won a WS championship since 1917.

The previous year, the Boston Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals to become 2004 World Series Champions.

The "Curse of the Bambino" was a superstition cited as a reason for the failure of the Boston Red Sox baseball team to win the World Series in the 86-year period from 1918 until 2004.

The curse was said to have begun after the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth, sometimes called The Bambino, to the NEW YORK YANKEES in the off-season of 1919-1920.

As of today, the Yankees lead the AL East with the Red Sox down by five games (Blue Jays down by 12).
The White Sox are on top of the AL Central over Detroit by one game.

I don't pay much attention to the National League until it gets closer to October.

  6. The Houston Astros don't play very good baseball but several (Roger Clemens for one) live in the 'blue stocking' neighborhoods.

  11. Doug,

Not to change the subject or anything, but I told my father you sent "Happy 87th Birthday" greetings.

The whole family is still in town and we had a lovely picnic today at Lake Taconic.

I'm glad JFK has WiFi. I would hate to miss tomorrow's modern adjustment of a definition from Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary.

Redefining misanthropy for a fresh generation seems to be your specialty, no?

  13. Jim, here I though blue stockings were rare.

    Thank you, Karen and Wikipedia.

TLP, you always see the pretty side.

Pia, I'm still not sure what one is but I'm sure you ain't, if you say so.

Jim, Clemens made most of his money with the blue sox, didn't he?

Or the blue nose, maybe, Bear.

    Thom, maybe?

Nicole, be darned if I know. Do some of us wear blue stockings?

Ariel, to be honest, I'm still not sure what the word means.

    Actonbell, a pirate's daughter, I think.

    Thanks, K. I suppose.

Coop, is the blue from the ink or the contract language?

  14. Doug, my understanding is that the word is supposed to be about women who are not interested in science and books and arts and etc for being interested but for being able to brag about it. Funny enough, the name comes from the blue stockings of a man, a parson, and the truest blue stocking I have ever heard of is also a man, Oscar Wilde, although he never denied it. :)
