Logomachy

LOGOMACHY, n. A war in which the weapons are words and the wounds punctures in the swim-bladder of self-esteem — a kind of contest in which, the vanquished being unconscious of defeat, the victor is denied the reward of success.
'Tis said by divers of the scholar-men
That poor Salmasius died of Milton's pen.
Alas! we cannot know if this is true,
For reading Milton's wit we perish too.
2008 Update:  A war of wordsmiths, journalled by assassins.  Politics.

LOGOMACHY n.
Often the legal weapon of choice in both major and minor duels.

(I have no idea how I managed that slip above. I must have momentarily been typing in my sleep. And if you don't think that's possible, just ask the amoeba.)

Depends on what your definition of is is.

Or sex. As in "I did not have sex with that woman.

You KNOW I had to look up this word. Dang boy, have mercy on us!

I prefer the words TLP brings.

Sex, n, what TLP did not have with that woman.

logomachy: a person who believes a log is a an object of lust and desire, puts a face on it, dress or suit, drives with it, does everything a person would do with a partner including bringing it to work functions and having sex with it--sex as in penetration--not what Bill did with that woman

Jim, you win the situmachy.

Ariel, in all which reviews?

Amoeba, I think you'd stretch a lego.

TLP, it isn't my fault! Ambrose had one of those vocabularies I just fake having.

Perfect, Ariel.

That's funny, Pia, but I'm going to check the stage of the moon. Today is like the Sadie Hawkins Day of metaphors.

Logomachy: Doug's failure to add a response comment to Jamie Dawn's comment yesterday.

Forgiveness: Jamie Dawn's kindness in not holding ill will against Doug for this grievance.

Have a blessed day.
Selah.

(I am heaping coals of fire upon thee.)

hmmmm... must not have been paying attention cuz I was too busy trying to find the pennsyltucky restaurant with all the dancing girls.

logomachy... the vanquished being unconscious of defeat... oh! You must mean Hillary's PUMA people!!!

I'll be so glad when these conventions are over and I get to actually canvass the neighborhoods and have people tell me how much politics stink. hahahahaaaa

Actonbell, I don't read enough Friedman to know that, but he's welcome to it as far as I'm concerned.

Jim, is that wise? (Situmachy was coined today for battle for place. I think I mixed Latin and Greelk, roots, though. Sorry, Professor.)

Sauerkraut, I have nothing for or against the PUMA people. One convention down.

Doug, if you type Waking Ambrose in Google, first you'll find Waking Ambrose, then all those sites and blogs write about Waking Ambrose. I bet you cannot surf the Net without people asking for your autograph all the time...

Doug The Una said...

There you are, Rani!

Ariel, you'd sort of think I'd have done that by now, wouldn't you? I'll give it a shot.

Once again you have ignored me. I suppose you're going to claim that I was sleeping and you didn't want to wake me.

Doug The Una said...

I was trying not to distract you from the new job. Serves me right for trying to help. (sorry)

You could be a diplomat in that kind of war. Or a double agent.

Politics?? I think the Reagan administration put the nail in the coffin of political logomachy.
