A Philosopher King Foiled
Episode 37 of 40 in The Meditations of Diogenes The Cynic. Thanks to this week's reader.
To hear the story, follow the mighty Persian Army to victory.
To read the story, ask Leonidas for a better idea.
Very well read, and very well written. I don't remember the voice if in fact I've heard it before.
Many, many lines in this one are still swimming around in my head. I think that, " To be exiled from imprisonment was the purpose of philosophy after all and neither man had loved Persian cuisine. Something in the lamb," is my favorite.
Why is The Prattler staying up so late? Overtime work? Partying? Too much caffeine?
PARTNER, n.,A co-catastrophe. True. But it is nice to have someone in the awful times of life. The good times can be managed alone.
So many good lines in this episode. No beard here, but *pretending to be in deep thought." TLP is right about the partner. Sometimes I wonder if it's a good idea to have two. xoxo
This reader has a crystal clear voice. Very good job!!
partner: person to blame when things go awry
We are off to the county fair for the afternoon. YeeHaw!! Maybe we'll see a tortoise and a hare. All I know is I don't want to be late for the moonshine seminar. It starts at 3:00.
Take two. Though this time I can't blame Blogger. I had just finished writing the comment when the phone rang. Our Internet provider wished us to take their customer satisfaction survey. We had just put lunch on the table, so Quilly (who had answered the phone) said "no". At that moment, the connection failed. Taking my comment with it. Coincidence ...?
And, as all of you in America surely know, these megacorporations constantly insist that they are our partners. Sure. Like lambs are to the meat-packing plant.
Minka - not my first visit, but most certainly my first adventure with audio :)
TLP - nope - we haven't spoken before. And I agree, it is nice to have a co-partner, to help out when your chariot upsets itself.
Mireille: You have two partners? You sound the part of a great philospher.
Jamie Dawn - what a nice thing to say! Never heard myself on the computer before, but I do so enjoy reading stories. This one was wonderfully written. Say, got any of that moonshine left? I've got a great recipe!
Goldennib - *beams*... thanks! Someone to stand beside you and yell right along with you too.
AP3: SURPRISE! Yes, the definition our Doug came up with stands. BTW - I thought you resemble a cartoon character made into another cartoon. So clever!
The Amoeba: I ALWAYS blame Blogger for everything. Everything. I like your analogy of partners. So true.
Quilly - You said it best of all. Partners share everything - together.
G - I'm your California counterpart :) only without all the cool sound effects! Coast to coast, strong voices rule!
Thank you Doug - for allowing me to have the fun and anticipation of a new adventure! Can't wait to hear the rest of your great epic.
Something in the lamb, something in Jerusalem? In the voice of a crystal really. It was in a movie: you'd better never have a partner, they just slow you down and if they die, you are the one to blame.
TLP, that lazy Prattler took the week off in the end. I suspect heroin.
Mireille, I suspect not but let me know.
Jamie Dawn, isn't 3 early for moonshine?
Footprints in the sand, Nessa.
Aral, I believe you guys do resemble that definition. A great couple, for sure.
Amoeba, take 1 must have been some comment!
Quilly, that's the secret, isn't it?
G, it was Terry and I hadn't heard her before. You guys must have been psychically connected. When I heard the recording I asked Terry if your voice had sounded familiar. Her voice reminds me of yours, but Californiaish and more crowlike, less lampy.
Terry, thanks for doing this and a great job it was. Not to mention, it's great to have a co-catastrophe answering comments.
Ariel, which movie(s) was that? All of Clint Eastwood's?
Terry, my sister from the WestCoast! So glad you took up the call to read - you made a wonderful episode even better. Loved hearing your voice - now the mystery of the familiarity is solved ;)
Terry? i had a feeling that was you! wow -- and a magnificent you, at that!
i'm such a dope -- i listened to this fabulous edition yesterday morning, then my partner in coffee-drinking crime and i went out for TGSNWM's, and i'll be darned if i never made it back, in order to comment.
what a treat!! i am in complete agreement with my NBFF (G), you sound just as i imagined you would, and i imagined you'd sound like a friend i'd want to chat with for hours on end. *claps enthusiastically* : )
That is true, Terry, you sound exactly one pictures you to sound. The voice of Andersen's Snow Queen, the voice one expects to hear under emerald green hills instead of palms.
Well, bugger me! Was I way off...*tips imaginary hat to Terry* That wa sa wonderful reading and I feel a bit embarassed I didn't give the newest reader her fair bot of praise. Don't worry, my embarrasment will pass quickly, probably sooner than it should.
Well done Terry, I am glad you are part of this. So Doug, we are getting closer to teh end now...started with making a CD for everybody. Nicely wrapped it'd make a lovely December present.
Neva, if you'd commented before your coffee we'd have missed all that enthusiasm.
Ariel, I forgot to put in a line of cawing.
Minka, no need to run, I think I promised CDs for Christmas or other December holidays way back in the beginning. Nicely wrapped is kind of a stretch, though. I was planning on folding them in tortillas.
hey, where'd my tres amusant comment go? maybe if you're fashionably late in leaving comments, blogger chews 'em up and spits 'em out into the cosmos. it could happen...
i remember vaguely saying something about that funny visual i got on the cds in tortillas (cdillas?) and then also many congratulations to Terrence for a most excellent reading! what a voice, quelle expression, you could go into radio, you bright reader, you! wonderful treat, kiddo. oh yeah, and how do you get your voice over to Dry Dog's computer? the wonders of technology hardly ever cease to amaze me...what i mean by that, is that mostly they amaze me, but sometimes they dont...
Minka, send a lock of hair, then! You're the weaver around here.
JJ, you are tacitly tres amusant when your comments don't appear. You can record your voice onto a computer and email it. Poopy can explain. All the recordings for Diogenes are assigned, but if I do another story like this in 2008, I'll expect you to have it worked out by then. The lack of JJ speaking is something the whole blogosphere is diminished by.
I tres that. (uh, maybe I second that) :) JJ and I decided one day whilst talking via the telephone that we also sound alike. A universal type of reader, you know? Oh Canada, NY NY, and I Left My Heart...
man, that is one gorgeous word, tacit... i love the implication of it. imagine being funny in one's own absence...i should disappear more often, and then possibly get to be more clever and edgy than i actually am....
anyhoo, perhaps upon hearing my voice, you'll understand why blogosphere may just be better off diminished. kindly note i did not bust forth to audition for the gig when you intimated that readings were coming gently to a close...perhaps in my next lifetime i'll be that brave, which is not to say i haven't tried reading one of your stories aloud when a tree fell in the forest and no one was listening...
Terry, I think I'll need your support. Work on her.
JJ, your humility is only exceeded by the qualities you're humble about. But, I understand very well the weirdness around putting your voice out there. You remember you're invited and I won't take it badly if you aren't ready.
oh oh, she exclaimed nervously, looking for that rock she is used to hiding under... and now, Terry's going to work on me? you know what that means, dont you? that means we're getting a beagle.
anyway, thank you, Sir Dry Dog...its actually quite an honour to be invited to read by the author himself...i'm quite touched, perhaps more than is the legal limit....
and Terrence, you think we sound similar, huh? except i am sans California accent, plus my voice is about 2 octaves lower than yours, more monotone and snarky... (i'm a late onset curmudgeon.)

Wow
ok, maybe I should add to that rather self-explaining expression.
We know the voice, not her first visit...is it?! Well read and well written. I think overall my third favorite part so far.
Did Telemetheus thought the earth was flat or somethin'? But to go astray is soemthign philosophy encourages, I suppose :)

Happy Weekend to all philosophers everywhere!
Great reading. I love the voice.
The definition really makes me giggle. It's always good to have someone to yell at during the messy times.
That is a good reading voice. Who is that??? Great episode.
btw, MWWP and I resemble that definition!

PARTNER n. co-catastrophe indeed -- someone with whom to share the despair -- and laughter.
I don't know, is it me or did Telemetheus picked a bad time of year for conversions in Jerusalem?
I can't wait to see how it turns out though! Nicely done and read. WHo is the reader that we've heard here before?
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Okay, I give up. Was it me?
Minka - not my first visit, but most certainly my first adventure with audio :)
