Heat

HEAT, n.
Heat, says Professor Tyndall, is a mode
Of motion, but I know now how he's proving
His point; but this I know — hot words bestowed
With skill will set the human fist a-moving,
And where it stops the stars burn free and wild.
Crede expertum — I have seen them, child.
—Gorton Swope
2009 Update: The condition poets will call inspiring, construction crews perspiring, joggers respirational, surfers recreational, the sleepy soporific, and the chef prolific; as measured by a thermometer.

It is not such a hot topic how that word heat has been corrupted by those who first begam using it as an allegory.

Did you know it was heating up the bandwith on the Internet with all these blogs that is really causing Global Warming! Mars is having Global Warming, too. Wonder if they got the web there? We may have to change from WWW for World Wide Web to UWW, Universe Wide Web. Then we would have Universe Warming!

I loved Bierce's crede expertum (Latin: believe the expert) so much that I've stolen it. Repeatedly.

Icy, it's rather difficult to say whether Mars has global warming or not, when there aren't any instruments there to provide data for anything but yesterday and today. Not a few real scientists would like to take the Russian whose pronouncement this was out back, and show him some of those free and wild stars. And maybe confiscate the bribes from the AGW deniers.

Thom - does the NBA have its courtside booki ... er, referees back yet? I hear they've been a little nervous, after the Miami team signed that agreement with the Police Athletic Leagues ...

the amoeba ~ I understand the Police Athletic League's Wali Jones (Miami Heat) Basketball Clinic at Florida Gulf Coast University in
Ft. Meyers is looking for a coach. Do you want volunteer?

k. riggs gardner said...

t.a. Do you want *to* volunteer? I understand you can wear beanies ~ golden, propeller or otherwise.

Karen, they're looking for basketBALL, not basketCASE. Now, if this were the lawyer's league, somebody might take my case ...

k. riggs gardner said...

the amoeba. I don't really care about your legal problems. The Angels think they're hot shit right now, but I don't agree.

I hate to over-comment. It's not only selfish but time-consuming too. S'kraut: I'm sorry for your discomfort?

Jim, nothing cools off a word like allegory.

Ariel, a loss to Hungarian humor, I'm sure. Like when a bird gets an American's cheeseburger.

Y tres, Diego.

Hahaha, Ariel. Quite the pickle.

I cain't neither, TLP.

Icy, never having been uploaded, I'll have to trust your accuracy.

Amoeba, I agree that Crede Expertum is an excellent phrase, I'm taking your word for it.

Thom, I'm not sure about always.

Thanks, Nessa. I try to keep the old particle excited.

No, Jenn, what you add to your story. I like to coat mine in rime.

Karen, I'm amused in particular by the first of the series.

Amoeba, how could that comment be the one with no link.

Karen, I'm sure stripes and a propellor beanie will flatter my friend.

Poobah, surely not all evil. Robert Frost, f'rinstance.

I can imagine, Quilly.

Amoeba, it's a fine line. Particularly in March.

Karen, did you switch to baseball? The Angels are proud of themselves again today.

Very right, Sauerkraut.

Karen, I'm sure he deserves no better. None of us do.

Haha, Coop. Riiiiiiiight. I had pegged you as more of a pepper spray gal.

Do ya?
