Hammer

HAMMER, n. An instrument for smashing the human thumb- a malleus as the Latin hath it. One of the old Frankish kings was called Charles Martel, or Charles the Hammer, because he was a beat.

2006 Update: A blunt instrument unless compared to a statistic.

I have no further message this morning but have developed a bad habit

If I had a hammer, I'd hammer out a meaning. I'd hammer out a meaning all over this blog.

As it is, I'll just hammer on the keyboard.

hammer: sometimes the only solution. also see Lennon/McCartney.

What bad habit???!!! Not you, please tell me not you.

Hammer: To hammer into the ground ~ a subject ~ or a word ~
I am sure that will happen here today.

I personally like the idea that if hit by a hammer, you exercise your right to freedom of speech to its fullest!

I hereby claim Doug´s bad habit and announce that the message he would like to pass on today is:

VOTE for Minka!

Hammer Time!

U Can't Touch This

Or maybe it's just earworm time.

Hammer: the name of an old singer guy (also known as MC Hammer)

This is another one of those "I've only had 4 hours of sleep" comments... I think I've learned my lesson. No more 2 AM trips to see friends at work for me.
That goes along with your bad habit... we've all got one...or a few. Mine just happens to be my current love interest.

Anonymous said...

well Sar took the earworm i'd hope to use. sigh. this serves to hammer home the value of rising early, *not* missing worms, etc.

and Solace Cai, your youth is showing! (not that that's a bad thing...) let's try to remember MC Hammer as the guy who also did the theme song for the Addams Family Movie!

Doug: you haven't taken up smoking and/or cross-dressing as a nun, have you?

Minka said...

Hammer,n. one of the tools depicted in the East-Germany flag!
Hammer, Zirkel, Aehrenkranz!

by the way, the *first* earworm i missed was hammered out by TLP... well done, missy!

I always thought it was a Black Musician!

Keep the commenting up and pretty soon you will end up as verbose as your sistah hermano mio! Cuidado, cuidado! Habits are hard to kick!

Hammer... *sigh* the object of many a bohemian fantasy whilst surrounded by toxic people...

Hammer: Thor's weapon of choice

One of Thor's famous battles with an invading giant named Nial has blessed us with many current slang terms, some of them being: "Hammer some sense into him ..." and "You've really hammered it," as well as the most famous phrase of all, "Hitting the Nial on the head."

The amoeba said...

Dam the Colorado, TLP, I gotta sing that this Sunday!

HAMMER, n. A bad actor. See KIRK, JAMES T..

WRENCH, n. Hammer. See also SCREWDRIVER, VICE GRIPS, PLIERS, SCISSORS, ROCK

Sickle and Hammer, don't you think this is the day for us to sing the Internationale together, Monika???

further message suggestion: today in 1819 Allan Pinkerton founded Chicago detective agency.

HAMMER,n. A style of verbal expression favored by individuals likewise lacking in subtlety or nuance.

Doug The Una said...

Minka, even hopping you're a danger.

TLP, if only someone would. Let's get you the Hammer of Sarcasm, the Bell of injustice.

Brian, I think that should be anvil.

Ariel, if bang bang Maxwell were that clever, he'd be dangerous.

Mo'a I got to work to find 26 comments and I like your odds.

Everyone, I just noticed on Mo'a's blog a link to the website for her art and this curmudgeon is top impressed to do anything but praise her work as stunning. Give a gander! That's one talented, creative lady making fun of us.

That's a great quote, Minkam and it's true a hammer is a great shortcut to self-actualization. So is hijacking.

Sar, another earworm. Did you know he got his stagename because people thought he looked like Hammerin' Hank Aaron? Now ya do.

Solace, that's a good bad habit. But old? I hope he's my age.

Puppybrose, I meant putting announcements at the bottom of posts but great nun pun!

Proper, Shamrock.

Minka, I'm with you up to Ährenkranz. Was ist daß?

Anomie, I don't know that one but I love watching people get eaten! Brings me peace in my heart. Do you think Netflix will have it?

That's it, Brian. We're killing time waiting for Dewy.

Weirsdo, to teach piano I guess it goes double, huh?

Starbender, welcome!

Puppy, great line from a great flick. Trivia time, do you know where the title came from?

Puppybrose, I believe that was an axe, but whatever it takes to get wise, I always say.

Haha, Miz B, I know I'm in the red zone lately. I know what you mean, too. When surrounded by enough fools, a hammer becomes erotic art.

Quilldancer, nicely done. Especially "Hitting the nial on the head."

O Ceallaigh, I love your definition of wrench. See also tooth, fist, heel, buck knife, forehead.

Ariel, thanks for both suggestions. Hum a few bars and see if we can pick it up.

Damn straight, Duxfine!

Hammer as in M.C. Hammer as in Stanley Burrell whom I met when he was 12-years old and then only destined to be the "Can't Touch This" flash in the pan.

At the time of making his acquaintence young "Hammer" was in the employ of one Charles O. Finley, then owner of the Oakland A's Baseball Team...Finley had seen him dance in the parking lot, liked him, and hired him to be his eyes and ears at the stadium while Finley was away at his Chicago home. He earned the nickname "Hammer" because he looked a bit like a young Hank Aaron.

(apologize for the d-list name dropping...didn't have the willpower to resist...I am weak.)

hammer: for when you care enough to slam the very best.

Doug, hope your habit doesn't require shoveling.

O Brother: Sullivan's Travels?

as for the hammer v axe? well, being a good Wikipediot, i double checked and found it was either/or. good enough for me and/or a comment!

(i kind of figured the "bad habit" was message-related)

Mutha said...

Don't apologize Joel. I'm always up for a baseball story. And Hammerin Hank Aaron was who I thought of for the definition.
Look kids, all those homeruns and no steroids!

mireille said...

At one time, Tom DeLay ... as he was pounding Texas voting districts into a shape that pleased him. Ahhh Tom. (Straighten that toupee! No one loves a crooked-haired convict.) xoxo

Anonymous said...

I hammered the man who sung the music

Get progressively worse at this!

Sar said...

Of course, Mireille! How did I miss making the Tom DeLay/Hammer connection?? *shakes head*

Pia I know you would've made it, but you got here after Mireille. I have no excuse, but I'll claim sufferage from a bad earworm.

Mike Hammer: figment of Spillane's imagination

~also~

hammer: stiletto induced toe deformity (sorry Sar, it had to be noted)

and you are SO correct, Doug, Mo'a's artwork is *magical*.

tsduff said...

There is a certain shark with a head shaped like this.

tsduff said...

Yes - yay Mo'a. I've got a piece of her art sitting innocently on my buffet... an elf of sorts. He brings us great joy.

Doug The Una said...

Joel, that's pretty cool and MC Hammer is no worse than C-list to me since he rapped on a Bebe and Cece Winans album.

Haha, G, I've been snowed under.

Smart puppy! I always remember it as Haephestus' axe.

Amen, Mutha. I used to go to Braves games at the old Atlanta/Fulton County stadium and I was always moved by the marker where Hammerin' Hank's 715th home run cleared the left-center wall. I will not feel the same about Barry Bonds accomplishing the same thing.

Mireille, I'm hoping he'll be a hammeree.

Pia, they were just scales!

Sar, what can be done to alleve your sufferage?

Puppy, it sure is. In all of noiriana Mike Hammer is the one I never quite got the fascination of.

True, Terry and likewise a blogger. Smart purchase. Elves make great gifts ;-)

Charlene Amsden said...

You guys are really hammering out the definations here. Looks like I'm not needed. Think I'll go get hammered.

Anonymous said...

V.I. well done finding something new to do with this word. I remember when Spenser was on, but I don't think I saw it. The Rockford Files kicked butt, though.

Haha, a4g. Great way to end the week. Have a good weekend.

Puppybrose, I'm just a poor country boy. That went way over my head, culturewise.

Quilldancer, raise a glass to you for me.

Actonbell, from the perspective of someone who knows you only by blogging, that was a perfect self-descriptions. I always look forward to Fridays when we get tipsy AB. Have a great weekend.

Doug The Una said...

That wasn't Cooper. Nor Ariel.

I'll have what Actonbell and Quilldancer are having.

And I am talking HAMMER-kinda-BANG you perverts!!! FOR SHAME!

Doug The Una said...

Sophisticated, depends, if the employee were a pharmacist, wouldn't poison be the best option?

Puppy, you are a lioness. I'm of the Donkey Kong Generation and without children.

Poobah, the bad habit was putting an announcement on every post this week.

One, Quilldancer?

Icy, I would too, if I could.

Good grief, Minka. Now I see how the Emperor Penguin got its name.

Miz B, I guess I'll have to write one.

Sophisticated Writer said...

Yes, indeed, Doug!! *scratch head* Poison is silent, you just watch. but well the impact of the hammer on the nasty boss's big head would leave me more thrilled. And I could do it again and again and again...

Janet said...

Or how about the more obscure reference to Hammer the classic rapper?

Please Hammer, don't hurt 'em.

Since this site runs so well on guest posts I wondered if you would consider perhaps offering your services to mine one day soon. Just click on the link. The post explains it all.

Only one, Doug. I really don't like the sensation of being drunk. The 22nd year of my life was pretty much spent in the bathroom on my knees. I'm not going back there....

And why only now am I singing Maxwell's Silver Hammer? Where was that yesterday when I needed it?

Doug The Una said...

Ariel, nothing like Bohemian Rhapsody to lighten the mood.

Sophisticated, I think hammers are better for torture and long, slow deaths. Or carpentry.

Janet, good to see you, friend. Can't touch that.

Sounds like senior year to me, Quilly. I don't know. He just shows up when you least expect him.
