Truth

TRUTH, n. An ingenious compound of desirability and appearance. Discovery of truth is the sole purpose of philosophy, which is the most ancient occupation of the human mind and has a fair prospect of existing with increasing activity to the end of time.

2007 Update: Bias.

"It is a truth universally accepted that..."

"Always tell the truth, it is less to remember!" -Icelandic saying badly translated-

Truth, justice, and the American Way...whatever happened to good old Superman anyway? And what exactly is the American Way? I was always a bit confused by that part of the slogan.

Tell the whole Truth

"You seem to be in some distress," said the kindly judge to the witness. "Is anything the matter?"

"Well, your honour," said the witness, "I swore to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, but every time I try, some lawyer objects."

TRUTH, n. Beauty. See BEAUTY, Mr. Keats. Perishable. Like the American Way:

DUE PROCESS, phr. Bunker buster bombs.

Truth: plastic surgery.

truth my thoughts, whereas your thoughts are only opinions, and bad opinions at that -- unless, of course, they agree with mine.

Truth: The scorched battlefield separating press agents and reporters.

"You want answers?"
"I want the truth!"
"You can't handle the truth!"

One of my all-time favorite move exchanges from, of course, A Few Good Men.

Truth be told, the first thought that popped into my head involved ripping off my new, favorite version of this word, i.e.

"Truthiness: that which one holds to be true regardless of what is supported by fact." Stephen Colbert is the man and, that's the truth. (uh-oh, don't look now, but that was another TV reference from a bygone-but-grand/funny era.)

Truth: A set of statements that cannot be shown to be false. A shorthand way of writing "herein provisionally accepted as likely being or possessing a quality of true."

G said...

Puppy, that was the reference I was going to give - Edith Ann and that's the truth (insert raspberry here)!

Michelle Malkin said Ann Coulter has gone too far. There is truth in that statement

there is truth in that statement though the person who made it contributes to the lack of truth in American society

Minka, that's good advice. Less to say, but more to do.

Joel, hopefully it doesn't refer to the bill of rights. Apple pie?

Minka, that's actually a timely gag for the U.S. right now. Google I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby.

Amoeba, that's funny but I have no idea what the abbreviation phr stands for. Some dictionary-maker, huh?

Indie, in saline veritas?

Quilly, I agree.

Al, you mean when it isn't a scorched battlefield?

Joel, that has to be about the most memorable scene Tom Cruise was in.

Puppy, so a lie with a constituent? Bless Colbert's sweet heart and skinny neck.

Good girl, Icy!

Good definition, Morgan. Kipling wrote a short story that makes the same point.

G, that sounds familiar. What's that from?

Nice, Karma.

Pia, those two passed to far a good way's back. Defending internment in WWII and forced conversion are absurdities.

From Laugh-in - Edith Ann was a character of Lilly Tomlin's. She would sit in a BIG rocking chair and talk about whatever little 6 year old girls would talk about in a nasally voice and she would end it with "and that's the truth!" and a raspberry. That's how my memory recollects it, sometimes Google recalls it slightly different.

The truth is that I was away yesterday and did not have a listen on the latest instalment of "The Meditations of Diogenes" I was going to guess "Paloma" at least that is what I think Paloma sounds like, my second guess was G...and that's the twuth"

Truth: My truth and yours are totally different.....What is truth anyway?

Sar said...

As my beloved Fox Mulder says, the truth is out there.

Indeed.

(*high fives Snuppy* for her Stephen Colbert nod)

I think the Bush administration has proved that truth is pretty much what you can lead people to believe.

Thanks, G. That explains a lot about my parents. They used to do that bit and I didn't know where it came from.

Mo'a, I'd be honored to have Paloma read an episode.

Sar, it's good there's so much truth in television.

Welcome, Mad. Just wait'll Karen gets here. You stole her line but I bet it doesn't stop her.

Gracias, Burrito Viejo. Tu tambien.

Ariel, I wouldn't know.

as long as i'm in "old TV show" mode (and very graciouly relieved my NBFF "Phonecia" is, too. *snort*) i may as well mention the program that gave Bob Barker his first national audience "Truth or Consequences" -- which is also the name of a town in New Mexico.

ps: this program should not be confused with Madonna's "Truth or Dare" because, well, that would be wrong.

Truth: that which is located dead center between Point A) what you think you know, and Point B) what i know i know.

*high fives Sar* Colbert rocks, girlfriend!

Mutha said...

Dang! Joel stole my line!

But I loved Truth or Consequences. The grown-ups got to lie on purpose. It seemed naughty at the time.

G said...

I'm swooning at the dreamy thought of Paloma and I sounding alike, dear Mo'a.

Haha Snuppy.

Sar said...

Snuppy - ain't that the truth, girlfriend!

Oh! Here's another one...

For The Truth, see Al Franken.

~Mo'a~ said...

G will have to coach her.....I can't do it, I have an accent.....so when G comes over Paloma and I will ply her with Nutella ;^>

relative.

Doug The Una said...

I remember that show, Neva. Kinda.

Mutha, it's funny, right? As kids we thought that was a real good trick.

G, you're right to swoon. But can you sound like that outdoors when its snowing?

Sar, whatever makes you look at Al Franken can't be worth it.

Mo'a the accent has what to do with anything?

Square, right on, cousin.

Actonbell, if the truth is always in the middle why is it so hard to find? By golly, it's ketchup, isn't it?

No. Donald's first name is not coffee break.
That's the truth.
I have no idea what you meant by "coffee break."
That's the truth.
I am dense.
That's the truth.

Good night.
Sleep tight.

Actonbell, That's funny, Actonbell, or Barbara.

You know, Jamie Dawn, that just may have been a really lame joke. Your middle name came because you were born early in the morning and made it easy on your brother and your brother didn't. I was just looking for a time after Dawn a troublesome baby could be born.

Terry, why be better than Mark Twain. I'm sure nature was a comfort and companionship an encuragement to him, too.

Aber bieten wir immer, Indie?
