Mythology

Mythology, n. The body of a primitive people's beliefs concerning its origin, early history, heroes, deities and so forth, as distinguished from the true accounts which it invents later.

2006 Update: Pantheistic spin substituting satyrs and unicorns for moral courage and accomplishment.

It is so strange that this should be the word today - my Girl Scout troop chose Myths as the theme for the Library Lock-in that they hosted over the weekend. At the end, the showed Disney's Hercules, during which they pointed out to me all the inaccuracies, i.e. showing Zeus and Hera as a happy, loving couple.

Mythology: Stories originally meant to entrall, later meant to make money. Includes modern mythical creatures such as movie stars and athletes.

Mythology: The memory of history in its original version, before it was rewritten.

(But I enjoyed Doug's and Dddragon's definitions, too).

Doug let me congratulate you. This is the first definition where I understood every word, but had to read it twice to make sense of it, for a dawg, that's incredible

mythology: any story we tell a kid to teach them about morals or family or anything, that then gets repeated and changed through the generations until it means the opposite of what it once meant. But is much funnier.

My-tho-logy: How Shakespeare, or alternatively Mel Brooks, might have written a damsel's encounter with a red-blooded logger.

Doug The Una said...

That is funny, Dddragon. I remember Zeus and Hera as about average. Good definition, too.

Indie, I had a thought you might go that way. It reminds me of your story about the castle your son built.

That's a funny one, Pia. In light of your first comment how about "A fable in which the author appears as a smart man and his friends as fairy cattle."

Sar, you're over my head this morning but your spelling is correct. There are no red-blooded bloggers.

mythology - Derived from the root "my" modified by "thology", the study of.

Ergo, mythology = the study of my personal history.

Mythology is the tale of a false love affair... such as mine and Mick Jagger and Tim McGraw...prrrr!

Just stopping by to wish you a Happy Early
Valentine's Day
go by and pick up your gift!

“Myths are public dreams, dreams are private myths.”

-Joseph Campell-

Well said, Joseph :)

Sar said...

No way! Me? Over your head?

Perhaps I should have spelled it out "My thou art loggy".

Silly, yes, but I thought it was kinda funny. Too bad there aren't any red-blooded bloggers around to appreciate this damsel's attempt at humor. *sigh*

You are referring to the mythology of Valentine's Day, aren't you? *Please see my blog for important message* ♥ xoxo

Mythology: Epic tales where the men are larger than life and the women more ravishing than average. Qualities are overexagerrated so that real people seem pretty dull in comparison.

(I like Monika's dreams/myths quote.)

mythology-i.e. city girl meets boy, girl falls in love with boy, boy and girl live happily ever after.
me bitter? NOOOOO! ;)

Miz BoheMia said...

My eyes! My eyes!
My! Shayna! A threesome? You go girl!

And for a second there I thought I read Monika say "pubic dreams"...

All myths... alas, forever to be recorded in the anals of Waking Ambrose's mythology!

Doug The Una said...

So, Karma, Mythythology is the kind you get in trouble over, huh?

Icy, I thought that was a fishing story. Good girl, anyway.

Poobah, especially yours, my omnipotent friend.

Shayna, that's as opposed to a true story like the one between Mick and Tim, right? The gift is delightful, thank you. *wags*

Great quote, Monika. I want to remember that one. Thanks.

Sorry, Sar. Bloggers all have green blood like Vulcans.

Oh, Blessed Virgin, Mireille. OK, but I may boycot your site next February.

Very true, Jamie Dawn. Actually, I'm a little smaller in my myths.

Masil, I'm glad you're not bitter. And have hooves.

Um, Miz B. You mean annals, right? Remember this is a pubic site.

Lordamercy, Doug. When you posted this word did you ever think it would evoke such colorful dialog? (*wink wink MizB* )

It's simply not logical.

Mythology always reminds me of good ole JC You know, Joseph Campbell…

“Myths are public dreams, dreams are private myths”

“A one sentence definition of mythology? "Mythology" is what we call someone else's religion”

Oh, and not exactly mythology (well, sorta) another of my favorite JC quotes…

“Computers are like Old Testament gods; lots of rules and no mercy.”

Alana said...

Oops, that'll teach me to comment before reading everyone elses comments...nice quote Monika!

You better watch it Doug... there is nothing between Tim and Mick... unless it is me!!!!!!! Ooopps! Did I say that? *embarrassed*

Glad you like the gift and I loved the bouquet!

heehee Miz B. one never knows what comes out of those annals ;))

Pacifica, Miz B. No hay problema.

Logo, thos.?

Moni kaI dno't unde rstand ti iether.

Sar, it seems to have made people focus on their hands as good mythology is meant to.

Who is this Joseph Campbell, SG, and did he coin "Imitation is the highest form of flattery" by any chance.

I like my gift so much, Shayna, I won't email this conversation to your husband.

Thanks, Actonbell. Cupid was the son of Venus. The father hasn't come forward yet. Of course, I'm not sure either with the Gods of War and Thunder jealous of me.

Karma, don't encourage her, please.

Gifts?! Bouquets!? Cupid's darts are all aquiver! ♥ xoxo

Mythology - Which one is it: creationism, intelligent design, or theory of evolution?

Anonymous said...

Doug, yeah, I wasn't sure about what that would be either, but then I started singing

If Moses supposes his thoses
are roses,
then Moses supposes erroneously.

So, there ya have it.

Alana said...

I'm going to assume you were kidding when you asked that, as I don't think one is allowed to re-define "mythology" if they don't know who Joseph Campbell is...

http://www.jcf.org/index2.php

Oh, I'm not sure if he coined that particular quote, but here is one another one you may appreciate...

"One of the functions of mythology is supporting and validating the moral order of a certain given society. Well, what's your group? What's the society with which you associate? .... Are you hanging onto something from the third millennium BC or can you accept this challenge of the present moment? Open up and don't be afraid to let down the walls and let your neighbor in, so that you aren't defending yourself and your crowd against another system."

I'll just enjoy all the comments on this one. (Translation: I got nothin'.)

Doug The Una said...

Mireille, and his aim isn't so good. I ain't skeered.

Welcome, Karen. Which one has the fish with legs, again?

Logo, I feel much better now, thanks. Can I talk to Ariella?

Jamie Dawn, there's something for everyone here at Waking Ambrose.

I'm not kidding, Square Girl. Please don't confuse pretentiousness with education. I'm curious, though.

Fred, some Bellerophon you turned out to be. Get up on that horse.

Oooooh! Had I known the word "anals" would have gotten this bohemian so much attention I would have said it sooner! Bohemians loooveee the spotlight! Getting into trouble may not be so bad after all! Hmmm....

Happy Valentine's Day dear Doug and boho smooches comin' your way!

Minka said...

Square girl...it is such a great quote that it deserves to be pointed out in the same comment section at leats twice!!!
In that case:
“Myths are public dreams, dreams are private myths.” :)
Happy Valentine´s Day, Dougie boy!

Doug The Una said...

Alice, I really like that one.

Shayna, I had a friend named Wendell who would promise his wife, in front of everyone, fidelity unto death unless Naomi Judd showed up in which case, Sayonara. She seemed comfortable with that.

Weirsdo, right on.

Squaregirl, it seems everyone does apart from this writer.

And to you, Miz B. People do notice when Bohemians enter the room.

Monika, today is complete. Mädchen, I wish you a Happy Valentine's Day as well and a buss on the cheek from a handsome Viking.
