The Red Mask of Death

Story #68, in which a cocktail party goes amiss.

To hear the story, call the specter.

To read the story, comfort Edgar Allen Poe who's rolling in his grave about now but probably used to it.

This week in The Prattler, "Trick or Treat" which should be up by 11AM TLP Daylight Savings Time.

a little sentimentalism hidden behind Poe's mask every once in a while?

Oh, bunny butt! AP3 will swoon!

Speaking as a blithe spirit, I'd be his kittycat ANY day. Skillfully scary story, D. xoxo

My mother and sister made it back safely from Disney World yesterday. Not a moment too soon, I see. [wipes brow]

Now I will return to trying to get Blogger to accept my post. This comment is a test case. If it works I'll have a strong suspicion that Our Benificent Host is previewing and censoring my posts. And that should be a source of great fear.

TERROR, n. What happens when you realize that The League of the Governmental and Commercial Powers has decided that humankind is not fit for self-government, and, because you are buried by their trinkets, it is too late to do anything about it.

Hearing "Bring me the scut of that bunny!" in Mickey's squeeky voice made me laugh.

And really, while the gaunt man's rhymes were impressive, he really didn't need to whine and complain about being there first. All he had to do was present his Fast Pass. Sheesh!

Great Halloween story, Doug.

Good morning to you, Ms. Ariel, from we three dead.

TLP, this story ought to drive her wild, don't you think?

Thanks, Mireille, and I'm sure he'd have you.

Al, remind me, are the e tickets the Matterhorn or Mr. Toad's Teacup Ride?

Aral, excellent restraint, sis.

Thank you, puppytoes. *Bows* *Tail falls off*

O Ceallaigh, trinkets can be worn on the eyes.

Thanks, Sar. I didn't know about the fast pass.

Hmmm. Been awhile since they printed the E tickets, huh?

If it helps, Sally Ride once described riding the Space Shuttle as an E Ticket.

Definitely a compliment, Dougy. Thanks again.

OOOOOOOOOOOOO
lovely!
This makes me want to take Doug camping and have him tell stories by firelight while eating smores, or, ok, really just the smores and the stories are the important bits, this could really happen anywhere and I would be happy.

Anonymous said...

Logo: as long as you don't camp with him anywhere near a stream... i think you'll be fine. stories & s'mores and then s'more stories?? sounds good to me! xo

I loveloveloved the first paragraph, the rest was alright :)
In Iceland on Saturdays, most people have what we call nammi-dagur. Translated it means sweet day. Many of us go into a store and buy "bland-i-poka", a little plastic bag you fill with sweets you like.
This story reminded me a little of that.
The many different tastes picked out and put together for a different enjoyment.
Lovely *and she put a chocolate banana into her mouth*
Kudos on the very dramatic musical beginning. That shook me awake in a heartbeat!

Doug, I love the way you weave words. The ending made me flinch. I checked my clothing and skin for tatters and rending. Nicely, nicely done.

Doug The Una said...

Thanks, Al. I accept slander and praise with equal joy but ambiguity can tie me up all day.

Logo, I'm getting my signs made: "Will talk for food."

Neva, her children are still young. I'm not a monster.

A fair review, Minka. I dream of those. Every Saturday? It's a wonder you still have glaciers with all the running around that must follow.

Bravo! Wonderfully clever take on Poe--loved it! The music was a very nice touch.

Doug The Una said...

Sorry, Quill we crossed in the ether. Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you weren't harmed.

Anonymous said...

you know, i feel stupid for not mentioning the music, which was a lovely touch. sooooo spooky. and great fun!

Monika, if and when you're ever able to visit Disney's various lands and/or worlds, i have no doubt you'll catch on to the more darkly humorous aspect of this story! the castle... the party-goers... the Mouse! all too perfect for a scary Hallowe'en tale... especially with the "demons" so sweetly disguised as a bunny and cat. (those leaves? ouch!) i'm also guessing the muses for this story will be flattered to have been portrayed in such fine fashion! xox

d'oh! this time "anonymous" was me.

G said...

So are the good reviews unfair? Well then, I must be unfair. There's no way around it - good story from start to finish! I mean I'm still chuckling.

Doug, BASIP is up, you know... such as it is.

This really was a great story today, and it's been driving me wild....

"Terror"

What joy I find in ghastly shrieks
to see the horror rise in peaks
no escape in darkest night
all of you cower in fright
my bunny scut filled with power
pellets not leaves on you shower
clear the way let me pass
over your bodies a rotting mass
never again prince will reign
this requires a better brain
free rides for all is my cry
under hot sun all will fry
abandon all costumes at the gate
your fate is mine don't be late
your chore will be a bitter task
The Gaunt Man In The Red Mask.

Puuuurrrrrrrrrrrrr! Happy Cat! Thank you Doug, for the marvelous transformation - into my true evil being! What a wonderful surprise today - (imagine Happy Snoopy Dance). All of those 10,000 leaves are hand stamped, too! Not your ordinary leaves, oh no. Hand crafted! I am so pleased they we fit into the story line so very well. I am truly honored! I shall link! Happy Halloween, Doug! (BTW - is the Prince Mickey in FL an aberration or is the CA one?)

Thanks, Actonbell. That piece was probably played at Poe's wedding.

Sure, Puppybrose/anonymous and thanks. Taste is taste.

G, all reviews and how-dos are fair and appreciated. I just get a special thrill out of mixed ones. Some kind of fetish, I suppose.

Thanks, Tali. I like to think I write for the 8 going on 40 crowd. It's my favorite audience.

Mutha, or the smoke.

Quill Toccata and Fugue in D Minor is definitely the soundtrack to Blogger.

Thanks, ap3. I should have warned you there'd be bunny butts.

Hummingbunny, that was the perfectest accompaniment. Poetry is your real super power.

Diane, glad you're a glad kiten. I haven't been to Disney World since I was four to compare Mickeys, but I can tell this story of that time: I went to the restroom while my family was eating and there was a long line. By the time I got back, my parents had last count of how many children they were supposed to have (The right answer would have been two back then) and gone back to riding rides, etc. I looked all over but couldn't find them. I searched and searched and around dusk I found my folks near the castle. Apparently the first thing I said was "You were lost!"

hummingbunny sent me here... wow what a place you've got. Great story, great voice and great that Brian and Diane were your inspiration... his poetry is wonderful and he inspires me to read more and write more.

lotsa luv ann xxxxx

Doug, as in "or the mirrors"? Hope is always a light to me.

Welcome, Ann. It was kind of Brian and Diane to share you.

Then let it shine, Mutha.

10:15 p.m., Doug? Aren't you up past your bedtime? But then you don't have to have something wonderful and witty posted tomorrow by 4 a.m.

Kyahgirl said...

good one Doug. The last line conjured up rivers of blood and a good scary halloween feel.
I like Mutha's definition of terror, that was bang on!

Doug The Una said...

Quill, that was late for me although not as late as I wrote the story. My rhythm was a little off this week.

Isn't that definition good, Kyahgirl? I almost feel bad about my response. Sometimes, a dog should just roll over.

My cat Ziggy's behind is always full of... which makes his face appear clean and though most think him beautiful I can no longer get close to him because the smell offends me so and so off he goes...

I once had 22 bunnies, I kid you not, and when we released them the neighbor's gardener had caught one and wanted to eat it.

I like nonsequiturs...

'Tis my way, however psychotic it may be but then again what else did you expect, of saying that I love you to pieces and am awed at your brilliance and giddy from your words and oh how you let your Scorpio ways shine through...

... and I mean that in a good way...

GIDDY I SAY!!!

Mr. Poe wishes to thank you for recapping his story. He's now gone to his suite here at the Netherworld Hotel to take a shower.

Doug The Una said...

Hermana, I like non sequitors too. Did the rain fall mainly on the plain?

Puppybrose, writer downer.

Me too, Alice.

Cheesemeister, I hope it was a cold one. Tell him hello.

That was a masterpiece! 70 or so years from now someone is sure to start a Waking Doug blog, along the lines of Waking Ambrose.
