Orthography

ORTHOGRAPHY, n. The science of spelling by the eye instead of the ear. Advocated with more heat than light by the outmates of every asylum for the insane. They have had to concede a few things since the time of Chaucer, but are none the less hot in defence of those to be conceded hereafter.
A spelling reformer indicted
For fudge was before the court cicted.
The judge said: "Enough —
His candle we'll snough,
And his sepulchre shall not be whicted."

This (Jim) outmate likes satire and lets Google do the spelling. When he's not hiding in the grass.

Past attempts to reform spelling in English have amounted to painting the body of a car with a cracked block, seized transmission, and its driveshaft dragging on the ground. Kinda tough to teach logic when the language you teach it in makes no logical sense, and has to be rote-learned.

The use of spell checks shows who knows their there from their and lose from loose.

I used to write as an orthographist (using your definition) It greatly improved my vocabulary as I would have to think of so many alternative words

Ask any second language learner about orthography and, right after they say "bless you" and hand you a hanky, they will tell you ingles es loco -- even the English as a second language learners who don't speak Spanish (there are one or two).
