Paso Por Aqui

OK, so the world's 10,000th most meticulous blogger forgot to ask someone to be a guest this week. Then I saw this so this week, I'll be the guest and Kyah will be the guest host. Anyone who says "Pretty please" can be trusted as a host, I think.

1. One book you have read more than once.

Lonesome Dove, by Larry McMurtry I've read several times until Blue Duck, the murderous comanchero, started reminding me of the guy at the convenience store down the street.

One book you would want on a desert island.

Go Tell It On The Mountain, by James Baldwin because I've started it three times and each time left my copy on the bus when I was halfway done. If I were stuck on an island, I could blame crabs or a wave.

One book that made you laugh.

In Cold Blood, by Truman Capote. OK, how about Chronicle of a Death Foretold, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

One book that made you cry.

Winnie The Pooh, by A.A. Milne. I'm sorry but the way Winnie treats the honey pot makes me weep for all the love I've offered in this world that was stirred into tea and forgotten.

One book I wish I had written.

You tell me. If you had asked me I'd have said A Confederacy of Dunces, by John Kennedy Toole, just to continue the cycle.

One book you wish had never been written.

Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, by Judith Viorst and Ray Cruz (Thanks, Puppybrose) I might have grown up to be cheerful. It wasn't too late.

One book that I am currently reading.

Midnight Blue Noon, by Dorene Lorenz.

One book I have meant to read.

The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde. I'm at that age.

One book that changed your life.

Black Boy, by Richard Wright. I remember reading it and thinking that I could see Wright's childhood world as if I'd been there and his only friend, only to reach the scene where he went to the library and read Riders of The Purple Sage by Zane Grey and recorded being amazed that through books you could live a different life. Wright was inspired by Grey to become a writer and inspired me to stay a reader.

Tagging. I don't tag. I think Memes are the devil's marketing survey. OK, Jenna Howard.

The Wednesday Guest feature will return next week. If you'd like to be a guest on this site on an upcoming Wednesday, please send an email to dpascover at mac dot com and just let me know. On or about the Wednesday before you are featured, I will send you a word for satirical definition which I will hope to see the following Saturday with a graphic. No profanity or novels are appreciated. Previous guests who continue to show up often may be asked again at any time so no relaxing.

Winnie the Pooh?

Excuse me while I go and have a laugh...

ah... Morro Bay was it? say no morro. you're excused for not having a guest, *especially* in light of this en*light*ening meme.

and i never in a million years would have imagined Judith Viorst as being the one responsible for spawning such early onsettedness of your curmudgeonliness. that was a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad thing to do, and i shall throw out all of her books in protest.

YAY for Kyahgirl for finding a way to move you out from behind that rock.

You tagged me?!?!

Aurgh!!

And how come I'm not on this list, Mr. Pascover? Hmmmm?

Winnie the Pooh was my favorite book as a child. I don't think It ever made me cry though, except maybe the end of the final story, which is kind of sad (growing up and leaving childhood behind).

I love Confederacy of Dunces, too, and wish they would finally come out with the movie!

The Boy from S.A.C.A.D.A. said...

(I can speak for myself, Mr. Inditerminasy!) Winnie the Pooh is really brave how he rescues Piglet during the great flood.

Confederasy of Dunces is too long and theirs no pictures.

Anonymous said...

That Dunces thing really is something else.

But what about the Bluest Eye? Very collegiate, I know, but what impeccable style...

Shocking revelations! Just shocking. It's as if you are standing naked before us. Have you no shame, or sense of privacy?

See, Minka! After two years I finally work up the courage to share my personal pain only to get laughed at. I knew it. Take your telic clause and go. Never again.

Puppybrose, by all accounts I was a nice kid before I learned to read. At least, they can't prove otherwise.

You know, Jenna, I've never read a romance novel. I offer you to be my first. How do I get a copy?

Indie, they may be having trouble finding a director willing to kill himself before the release.

SACADA, I agree with you.

You know, Old Mule, I tried to read that and couldn't really get started. I'm a big fan of some of Morrison's others, though.

Ariel, it's why I have a blog.

Of course I do, TLP. So whattaya think?

Mireille, don't fret. It wasn't much.

a4g, that's a good definition coming from #9999.

VI, or the fast one to Clarkston?

Hahaha, Ariel. Thanks. I think Shamrock had a word for that, but maybe less sophisticated.

Tales of SLO - Oh how I wish I could go there toMorro.....I adore Morro Bay above most other beach towns... cousins lived there so I went there a lot growing up. Thanks for that great picture!

I've read Lonesome Dove more than a few times - I like the pigs on his ranch. Go figure.

for all the love I've offered in this world that was stirred into tea and forgotten.

Oi. Reminds me of a gal I once went with who insisted on singing this little ditty:

Tea for two
And none for you

She finally went away. About four years after it was time ...

I think that we should all give Doug questions to answer every Wednesday.

I'll be first (tho' not original): if a movie was made about your life, what actor should play you?

TLP said...

Too easy 3D: Al Pacino. But Al would need to have a face lift to do it now. I wonder if he could get his old face back for the occasion?

WhatdaI think? I think you're cuter'n hell. You should get nekked more often.

I second 3D's idea.

mireille said...

I third 3D's idea. And Lucy's right, you should get naked more often. xoxo

Anonymous said...

i'll 4th that idea! and, as you know, four of a kind makes 3D's idea the hands-down winner. Full Monty Wednesdays sounds like good clean fun for everyone.

Ariel the Thief said...

why people, what's wrong with putting love in your tea? you don't like your tea sweet?

Ariel the Thief said...

It's a man's life undressing in public.

Doug The Una said...

Terry, me too! The blue shoat was favorite character. I normally avoid the beach towns, but that rock is spectacular.

O Ceallaigh, be glad t'warn't 5.

Dddragon, as much as I adore you that's a terrible idea. But Robert Morley.

TLP, I try to confine my nudity to the workplace.

Mireille, you are a very strange kind of ally.

Puppybrose, democracy is so September 10.

Ariel, it's a sweetener? I thought it was a loudener.

I still can't believe you TAGGED me. ME?!?! Harrumph.

Minka, you can come play at my place. I have cute blog boys who sometimes, they get naughty and then... oh wait...pg blog. Well...you know.

"Winnie The Pooh"...

awwwwwww, you *do* have a soft side. :-)

Doug The Una said...

Minka, maybe you'll remember this the next time a man opens up and you think you want to ridicule him.

Jenna, you're a genuine published writer. Who better to tag? Besides, you take abuse well.

Actonbell, if it makes you feel any better I meant the main character wanting to write El Cid. What is it in the Pennsylvania water? A roast would actually be big fun, wouldn't it? We should have roasts.

Karen, I did until Minka squished it this morning. Nothing left but ornery now.

Here are two children's books that will make you really cry:

1. I'll Love You Forever

2. The Giving Tree

Anonymous said...

Jamie: "I´ll love you forever...as long as you live, my baby you´ll be?"
In case that is the book you are referring to...Joey read that for Emma in FRIENDS.

bad Dawg.

I've already done this meme, it's on my sidebar permanently.

"Dorian Grey" is an awesome book, damn I read it when I was twelve and several times thereafter. I'm a little slow.

I've never read Lonesome Dove.
Loved In Cold Blood several times, but didn't laugh.

I stick by the Velveteen Rabbit as the biggest tear jerker along with Charlotte.

Confederacy of Dunces- never read that either. I am feeling absolutely illiterate.

Anonymous said...

I only take your abuse well, Doug. Only you.

Damn now I have to remember EVERY book I've EVER read....it's enough to make me weep. So many books....so...many...books *sob*

Kyahgirl said...

I can't believe you did the meme. Thanks for playing. 'Pretty Please' really works. Hmmm, who knew?

Your answers and the comments from your comedy troupe have just had me in stitches here. I guess I have to check out this Lonesome Dove thing now.

Fun stuff. xoxo

Anonymous said...

i watched the Lonsome Dove mini-series (starring Robert Duvall) does that count? (actually, i read the book after i saw the series, so, technically, i think it *does*)

and, you know? i've always hoped that someday *someone* would discover a super-secret Truman Capote recording of In Cold Blood, and release it on a CD. *that* would be funny.

by the way, your picture of Morro Rock almost made me homesick for California...

Doug The Una said...

Logo, I promised him Thing 2. I was hedging.

Sure is, Poobah.

Jamie Dawn, The Giving Tree pretty near got it done. I haven't read I'll Love You Forever. Maybe that's how come I turned out this way.

I did not know that anonymous.

Cooper, but you never said pretty please. I think you'd actually like Lonesome Dove. The women in it are surprising. Ohh, yeah, Charlotte. Wow. If you're illiterate I'm thin.

Jenna, I thank you for that gift. But when you get to "Books I wish I'd Written" you can actually list one you wrote. You have my admiration for that.

Kyah, it worked that time. I think I built up some resistance since this morning.

Puppybrose, I actually think that counts. I don't believe any book has ever been brought to the screen that well. The town of Lonesome Dove looked exactly like I'd pictured it. Anf, yeah, Morro Rock is special.

tsduff said...

Jamie Dawn - The Giving Tree is the book (I'm not doing the Meme thing) that make me cry. I love that book, read it regularly to my only grandson, and then manage to think about it when I'm not actually reading it. Good show!

I do my best every day on my blog to undo the damage Judith Voirst inflicted on so many helpless children. It's a hard fight, but I fight it for kids like you.

Damn that book.

Oh dear lord, Doug....that's Morro Rock!

I used to live there (er, not on the rock, of course...)

Doug The Una said...

Liz, it may be too late for me but there are so many others who still need your help. Just the other day, I saw a copy of Alexander at my brother's house, just laying around where my nephew and niece could easily get ahold of it.

The power plant, Zenfo? That's interesting. Nice place to live.
