Half

HALF, n. One of two equal parts into which a thing may be divided, or considered as divided. In the fourteenth century a heated discussion arose among theologists and philosophers as to whether Omniscience could part an object into three halves; and the pious Father Aldrovinus publicly prayed in the cathedral at Rouen that God would demonstrate the affirmative of the proposition in some signal and unmistakable way, and particularly (if it should please Him) upon the body of that hardy blasphemer, Manutius Procinus, who maintained the negative. Procinus, however, was spared to die of the bite of a viper.

2010 Update: The popular portion, often sought thrice.

I have half a mind to discuss my better half but I'm half asleep and my coffee cup is half empty.

"One of two equal parts", what definition could be better? There's everything in it!

As long as mine is the bigger half, no one will get hurt. Especially if it's chocolate we're talkin' about.

When I bring home something tasty, it seems I always have to cut it into 4 halves. Fortunately, I am the only one who likes coffee in this house and my cup is never half full.

Half: Yogi Berra said "Half the lies they tell about me aren't true." Is that true Sarah Palin?

S'kraut ~ Starbuck's is a popular coffeehouse with tens of thousands of stores worldwide. Is there a Starbuck's in the land of the Amish?

Too many of 'em, Karen. All 3 of them are 8 too many.

Rutter's, Sheetz, Turkey Hill, etc., are all better than Star*ucks. And, at 84 cents for a 20 oz, a hell of a lot less expensive.

S'kraut ~ Those three shops have to be local because I've never heard of any of them. My personal favorite is Dunkin' Donuts.

Karen - beans from the New England Coffee Company ain't half bad down heah, but the dunkin franchises are only recent and they've not yet learned how to properly perk the juice. There's nothing like a fresh cup of dunkin when I am in the Boston-Prov area, but the stuff they call dunkin down heah smells like road apples. I well imagine it tastes about the same.

Well, S'kraut, there you have it. In this part of the U.S.A., the Dunkin' is well established. They also brew a helleva iced coffee year round!

Nessa, sounds all morning.

Well, half of everything, Ariel.

TLP, the whole box is yours. I'll just have half.

Sauerkraut, The napoleon est omnis divisa in partes tres?

Bear, half-baked is half-you.

Thom, I get the idea in her case

Two half-wits make a quarter wit, Jim.

Pia, that's absolutely true. I won't order them. I won't, dammit.

Karen, that's not from wikipedia, is it?

Sauerkraut, them Amish sure know commerce, don't they? It occurs to me we really ought to mock the heck out of them, being as how they don't read blogs.

Halved into three quarters isn't for me, either, Actonbell. Especially because in my case, that might make three men.

Karen, my ex is a big fan of Dunkin Donuts. We don't have them out here in Siberia-by-the-sea.

Brilliant, Icy. You win the day.

Sauerkraut, that ought to be standard.

Karen, I'll testify too.

Alana, still not looking for anything but thanks.

By the way, y'all, I notice I published yesterday with half of my definition missing which leads me to conclude you all have decided to just trust that I know what I'm talking about.

I don't think I read "often sought thrice" before this morning.

Need to update the year - it's 2010.

Doug The Una said...

Geez, Karen, thank. No, see my last comment above.

k. riggs gardner said...

I was writing mine as you were posting yours, so there was an overlap. I see all of your comments. I have no idea what you're talking about. I have never heard of Siberia-by-the-sea.

Skipped me again. Should I consider you a half-wit?

Doug The Una said...

Karen, I made that up.

Quilly, don't you already? (sorry)

quilly said...

Doug, if you repeat this out loud I will deny it, but no, I don't think you're a half-wit. In fact, I often find you quite witty.

Doug The Una said...

Thanks, Quilly and ditto. We can keep this between just us and the internet.
