An intellectual is often a bit socially awkward. It seems one must suffer for the other to flourish.

Intellectual,,adj., Highbrow. Describing one who has found something in life more interesting than sex.
Also see, lacking personality.

intellectual-one who uses The New York Times for more than packing boxes and lining bird cages.

Intellectual: anybody who graduated from the University of Chicago, undergrad. They all walk around using verbiage I'm not sure that they understand

Know too many UChi grads and am the official transltor betweeen them and the rest of the world.

Sar, sometimes the unwholesome, unwashed idiot playground attendant wakes up late. Yeah, we know what he's been doing!

Karma, it's a great disguise.

Haha, S. Still on that one, huh?

Jamie Dawn, it's true and sometimes the socially awkward are just slow-witted nerds. I know. I was disappointed too.

E.G., TLP?

You mean like the crossword puzzle, Masil?

Ooops, Pia, we were on at the same time. I find the propensity of the matriculators of elite university to plasticize the lexicon irredeemably enturbulating. Glad you're there for us common folk.

you know how I slay me, Doug.

ant. George W. Bush. See Not interested in anything, nor interesting in any way.

Doug The Una said...

Yeah, S, I do. Don't you need to cook a marshmallow or something?

Andrew, what about ugly?

TLP, our President isn't a deep thinker? Then why did we elect him?

Ariel the Thief said...

intellectuals are hypocritical but not every hypocrite is an intellectual.

dddragon said...

S, you slay me, too.

Intellectuals: what I am surrounded with; people to keep up with. Modern day Joneses in some circles. Example: our host.

Doug The Una said...

Ariel, your logic is perfect, honest, consistent and, therefore, false.

Hahahaha, Dddragon! That was great!

Lula, you're clearly over my head here.

Intellectual~ definition varies according to the grammatical person.

First person singular~ apparently self-depreciating with a strong subtext of declaring a clear superiority of mind, typically used in the negative.
"Cold fusion is just theoretical at this point but more research is needed, well, that is what Ira Plato of Science Friday tells me, I'm no intellectual."

Second person singular~ Used to praise excessively, the sincerity of such use is suspect.
"You are such an intellectual, Doug, I just love your site."

Third person singular~ A slur or a compliment, depending on the spite or self assuredness of the user.

Find them troubling too, Doug, but today nothing can make unhappy, nothing

Looking forward to a fair fight in 2008

Doug The Una said...

Ariella, I am never suspicious of your sincerity. Of course, I'm no intellectual.

Wow, Peter, I guess credits have a long shelf-life. Thanks for spending 30 seconds with me.

Pia, I wish you a fair fight in ought-eight.

I don't want to be a slow-witted nerd, but I would like to increase my intelligence.
Homeschooling my kids in areas such as Algebra has made me painfully aware of how lacking my natural intelligence really is.
"Jamie Hood, scholar"... will never be said of me, but, thankfully, I'm confident that "Jamie Hood, slow-witted nerd" won't be said of me either.

Doug The Una said...

Nice twist, Monika!

Jamie Hood, scholar, as intelligent as you are you wrong this time.

Bilious as always, a4g.

The great majority of the intelligensia that I know seek nothing, do nothing, and as yet are incapable of work. They call themselves the intelligentsia, yet they belittle their servants, treat the peasants like animals, are wretched students, never read anything serious, and do absolutely nothing; they only talk about science and know very little about art. They all look serious, have grim expressions, speak of weighty matters, and philosophize . . . .

I'll add an alternative def to Lucy Pez's intellectual:

Someone clever enough to make films with great sex in them that everyone calls art.

Cooper said...

naw that's a sintellectual

Lila said...

Intellectual, n., a quality you won't find in Pezland.

Notice how it's all about me lately, Doug?

;-)

Doug The Una said...

Sreekesh, well-confined and expansive.

Nice, Weirsdo. I was wondering how you'd approach this one.

Biercelike, Alice. Well done.

Indie, why do I think I could have put any word at all up there and that would have been your definition?

Haha again, Alice. You must be feeling better.

As far as I'm concerned, Aral, it should be all about you. I think intellectuals are like roaches in Pezland. Anex is a genius.

Ariel the Thief said...

@Doug: but darling, logic is like that. :)

TLP said...

Ahem...It's 9:39 AM on the east coast. Do you know where your Saturday post is? *tapping foot*

Doug The Una said...

Yes, dear Ariel. Almost always.

It's up now, TLP, and as you'll see, sometimes it really is best to make Mama wait.

Doug The Una said...

I'm telling you, Actonbell, they're like geese

Indeterminacy said...

I don't know why you think that, Doug. By the way, what word did you put up there?
