Sarcophagus

SARCOPHAGUS, n. Among the Greeks a coffin which being made of a certain kind of carnivorous stone, had the peculiar property of devouring the body placed in it. The sarcophagus known to modern obsequiographers is commonly a product of the carpenter's art.

2008 Update: A soundproof casing which insulates the departed from the mourners' testimony to his virtue and the mourners from the laughter of the deceased at all he got away with at their expense.

Your definition great with Yom Kippur and also the monetary climate in the world :)

Bless you. I have a cold too.

LOL TLP!

The statue carries the spirit, the sarcophagus carries what's left when the spirit'd gone. Good thing none of them smells!

SARCOPHAGUS, n. The carnivorous volcanic rocks of the Hawaiian Islands - which grow no food to speak of (not even pineapple or sugar cane, any more), have no fossil fuels and few mineral resources, and carry a population of millions who are wholly dependent for income and sustenance on persons and corporations whose fortunes have just evaporated in the markets.

I can't beat your definition, but my head is stuffed with library hours, so I'm going to let the others do all the thinking.

And now for something completely different. Go here for news about Quilly. Far better than carnivorous rocks.

Sarcophagus: sounds like a cancer of some kind.

You came up with a dandy definition!

sarcophagus...sounds like a missing nerve to me. You know, between the vagus and the glossopharyngeal nerve, we have place for another to stimulate our brains :)

Dusty Doggy liked your definition.

Sarcophagus: I want one! A large one if I can afford it or a smaller one (I could be creamated) if the economy crashes. This will give my mourners and descendents something about me for talk after I'm gone.

The box we're consigned to after our failure to communicate with Death.

Sarcophagus, the only dress can make the dead pretty.

It is always cheering to remember Paul Newman.

Sticky tongue, huh, K?

Pia, repent for the new year and the new age?

Achoo, TLP.

Ariel, marble is cold enough for the soul. The ground is warm enough for the body.

There's always fishin', Amoeba.

Cooper, when it gets crowded up there, watch a debate. Very freeing.

Amoeba, I've been but that is good news and all here ought to click that link. Even if Quilly is more of a logophagus.

A fair bit dandier than cancer, anyhow, JD.

Minka, you and previous commenters have helped me see a better definition. Sarcophagus, n. The case that contains whatever is studied or sought.

And the definition, I'm sure, likes Dusty. As do we all.

Jim, I suspect that won't be necessary.

Bear, it's no dream of mine.

Amen, Weirsdo.

Haha, Ariel. And the first proper suit you'll find me in.

Just on time as ever, A-bell.

Morning, brother Bear. Likewise.

The carniverous stone box aspect has piqued the interest of the Cannibal Party and they are wondering if they could have some to further the efforts of their campaign for terrorism.
