Hireling
HIRELING, n. A mercenary wretch who serves another person for wages, as distinguished from the respectable functionary who receives a salary.
2008 Update: A plaintiff in the probationary stage.
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion, A home and a country should leave us no more! Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution. No refuge could save the HIRELING and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
"Sagacious Democratic statesmen, erudite Democratic editors and authors - all were filled with unutterable disgust and horror at the revolting atrocities of 'hireling labor society' ... and all were impressed with the unalterable conviction that slavery is the only remedy for the complicated corruptions of the unnatural state of freedom of the ... Mechanic and Laborer."
at last count , 78 occupations ,have been subject to a audition ... a few met my probationary requirements ... others were simply dealt with , by engaging the feet into walk-away mode ... no need to explain to the "superior" salaried , as they were/are all knowing (lol)....the deserving informed---Gone to lunch And am not coming Back... for reasons unknown to myself-there is great satisfaction in exercising the clause, that i am a ,"at will" employee ....................prosperity for all-peace
Monika, I have seen that game, too. I love the German football team, they are my faves, but I hardly recognized them last time. They were THIS close to be kicked off the game by a Turkish team could hardly find a forward for that night. :-)
One of the big guns here at my place of employment lost his title as a hireling yesterday, blam right out of the blue, *poof*. Poor wretch - all the rest of us hirelings thought he was a wage earner.
ariel: i am still wearing my dirty german jersey. It's not the time! On Sunday we play a really good Spanish team in the final. I love soccer. God bless that round leather! Spain, you may start hireling us!
JD, groan and I groan with you. I'd have expected that from O Ceallaigh.
Minka, isn't 3-2 a 1 goal win? Grace in victory, Madame!
Jenn, a dime a dozen, probably, though not at Walmart.
Shayna, welcome back and a salute.
TLP, I hope to never face it. Nobody wins when I do the work.
Great find, Amoeba. Against that, Adam Smith said "It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker, that we can expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest."
Bear, for some of us the right career doesn't present itself until we retire.
Icy, that's the definition of felinity.
Ariel, I'll trust you on that.
Terry, earning is never the standard.
Quilly, you're unemployed because its summer and you're a teacher.
Nessa, a man cannot serve two masters, unless both are dogs.
Minka, it's probably ok to wash or change that shirt before Sunday. Not that we mind on the blog.
So right Doug, retirement seems to suit me fine though at times I think its time to start that second career.....(or is that opportunity #79 ).Think bio-fuel may be my new calling...still in research and reviewing classes on the subject...a homebrew with a kick, but no knocks...Peace and have a fire safe day !!
I had a semi-snappy comment, even late as I am, until I saw Minka's 2nd comment.
There was a time when kids in the playground called me a "dirty german" because that's the nation of my birth. Now that I live in the land of the amish and mennonite - germans both - I get to fly my 4' x 6' flag proudly.
Besides, a hireling is what Frodo Baggins brought along on his own quest. He kicked the biggest goal with the hireling, Samwise, at his side.
Monika, the Russian team was real good against Netherland, then didn't find itself anymore a few days later. The same can happen to the Spanish team. The one I always trust is the German team. Lehman feels like a whole on an otherwise very good ship, though...

From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Hirelings of the world unite!
Hirelings make the world go 'round. A day without hirelings would be a bad day indeed.
HIRELING, n.
1. Chinese "work wanted" ad. (Curse you, JD.)
2. Gigolo. Right, Jenn?
3. Wage slave.

The cats act like we are all their hirelings.

HIRELING -- the HI part I understand, but since I don't know how to LING, I don't know how to RELING. Perhaps that's why I'm unemployed?
Hireling: We all answer to someone.

befubn is the wordie veri.
Honk.
Hireling, who knew it was such a derogatory term.
Is there a nicer term for salaried mercenary wretches? Because that would be me.
That would be me.
I've been away so long, hopefully I'm still semi-welcome!
Bear, it sounds like a great move. You and Actonbell can probably find innovative synergisms centering on pale ale.
Actonbell, meep meep.
Sauerkraut, that might help explain your pseudonym. It is a pseudonym, right?
Toot toot, G.
Administrative diva, Coop.
Of course you're always welcome, C.
