SYMBOL, n. Something that is supposed to typify or stand for something else. Many symbols are mere "survivals" — things which having no longer any utility continue to exist because we have inherited the tendency to make them; as funereal urns carved on memorial monuments. They were once real urns holding the ashes of the dead. We cannot stop making them, but we can give them a name that conceals our helplessness.

I actually don't have anything smart-assy to say. I am fascinated by symbols and enjoy studying their meanings.
I hope you don't mind me leaving a shameless plug for my Creative Crabbing blog. It works kind of like Indie's blog, except I give you a sentence instead of a picture and you create a story. The sentences are from my forthcoming book.
Symbol: Iconic status bestowed upon an object by the imagination. Symbols allow the uniquely human characteristic wherein two people in the same place can witness the same actions with the same objects and yet later atest to two completely different events.
