Abide

Abide, v.i. To treat with merited indifference the landlord's notification that he has let his house to a party willing to pay.

2006 Update: To offer the enduring comfort of one's presence, as The LORD gave unto David, for example, usually while hoping for potato chips.

I can't abide going out the door without posting SOMETHING!

I hear they call it a-bidet in Europe.

I'm still sick. I'm going back to bed.

It seems the universe wants be to vent...

Abide~ To put up with intolerable in-laws who have set up tent in a certain bohemian's home...

To put up with laughter from certain bloggers who laugh at said bohemian's in-law misfortune...

Abide~ Mr. D having to put up with certain comments from a certain bohemian...

To put up with the notion that said bohemian's comments be taken the wrong way... I hope they are not for said bohemian is quite fond of her sweet friend Doug... in spite of the laughter...

*sniff, sniff*

Dddragon, the alternative was to stay home, then. I'd have chosen differently, but I thank you.

Feel better, Poobah.

Oh, Miz Bohemia, take a risk. Never taken the wrong way. Do you need me to take a hit out on LoveMama? I'd do it for you.

I can't tolerate people who make fun of other's speech patterns.

Sometimes I can't abide being so handsome. Really.

Lila said...

Thanks, Doug. Now I'm going to have "Abide with Me" for an earworm today.

Doug The Una said...

Kruella, can I talk to Karma?

Me either, TLP. That TLP!

I can only imagine, Kay.

It's good for you, Aral. You don't spend nearly enough time with Churches. Quick, I think someone left the heater on at Roxbury AME!

Sar said...

Abide: There's no crying in baseball!

TLP said...

I just reread your definition. SO, are you sayin' that The LORD is lookin' to get a free bag of chips? We'll all abide with you waiting for the answer to this, and many other questions yet to be asked.

(And if The LORD gets his pototo chips, can we say that He was chipped?)

I can't abide here all day. Got things to do and stuff.

Jamie Dawn said...

Ambrose's definition is good, but yours is REALLY good.
You outdid him. That twist at the end clinched it.
Speaking of potato chips, Dorito's Guacamole chips are pretty tasty.

The word "abide" does sound biblical, doesn't it? I guess it would be abideth, though.

Logophile said...

I cannot ABIDE all these smarty pants coming up with so many clever definitions while I sit here trying to marshal thought...SO annoying!
But I will take some chips.

Doug The Una said...

Right you are, Sar. At least not this year.

Thanks, Jamie Dawn, and for the culinary tip. "And who may abide the day of his coming..." Malachi 3:2.

Ariella, I'll leave the bowl on the floor.

Doug The Una said...

Oh, my bad, TLP. I was actually afraid it would read like that. I was trying to put the couch potatoes watching the Orange Bowl in proper context.

Oh wow. For the first time I don't see how you play into Bierce's definition

I think it might be the Lord hoping for David's potato chips ;-)

But I think Doug abides us all.

This is your most tricky I think

Abide: Trying to put up with lame x co-workers and the very infamous Retardo.

Didn't work.

Hey Doug, I feel like the next time I mention R here, you'll kick me out :-0

Cheers :)

Okay, I'm back. And now I've read what the definitions are ...

hmmm ... does dip come with the chips?

The Seminoles will need comfort after being thrown to the Nittany Lions' den tonight!

Doug The Una said...

Pia, your faith touches me.

Marwa, feel free to rename him, but you won't be kicked off.

Dddragon, when I say "chips" I mean "chips and dip" YOU ARE PENN STATE!!!!

Minka said...

Why don´t you just abide for a minute while I gas up my Time Machine and travel back into the 18th century where that word was last used?!

Doug The Una said...

AHHHHAHAHAHA, Monika. Can you drop me off at yesterday when you asked if I intended to be mean?

LeMas. said...

Ugh, I'm too tired to come up with a definition today. I'm lucky I can do complete sentences. And "abide" is sounding like one of those words that you aren't sure are real.

"to endure without yielding" ... the state of most relationships, esp. marriage. Except mine. HI, JIM! *waves* xoxo

It's abide! It's a plane! It's Superbierce!

- my apologies for this comment.

TLP said...

I like it Indie.

Chips and dip? Nobody ever tells me when there's a party over here. Hrmpf I would have brought beer. But NOW....

That dog.

Indeterminacy said...

Thanks Tan Lucy! I think it is better than "Have no fear, Underdoug is here!"

I don't want to get my ip banned.

Jamie Dawn said...

If you can abide another culinary tip, I put those Dorito's Guacamole chips on my sandwiches. They give an ordinary sandwich a delightful crunch, as well as a zesty zing!
I should have been a restaurant critic. I think that was my real calling.

Hi Doug,

I'm new here but I come by way of Courting Destiny. Love the dog pictures. Feel free to stop by my site anytime. I don't have a dog, but maybe I can whip you up a burger instead?:)

This was kind of a sad one for me. We sang "Abide with Me" at Dad's memorial service, so it leapt to mind even before AP 3's comment.
I don't think I'd have it at my service. Few can abide me, and I hate to beg.

Doug The Una said...

Masil, howdy is fine for now. We'll wait.

Welcome home, a4g. I for one am glad you're back. The best of EEMS is ok, but there's a lot of news to mock.

Haha, not to fear. I'm sure Jim suffers well.

No apologies necessary, Indie. Good laugh.

TLP, trust me, there's always chips and dip. Come on over. And I keep coffee for sinners.

You may want to apologize for that, Indie.

You can still write a cookbook, J.D.

Actonbell! Admire even.

Nice, Gabriel. Bierceish and, therefore, depraved.

Hi, Janet, I recognize you and welcome. I'll be by.

Weirsdo, funny comment but I apologize for bringing you there. It is a nice hymn.

Abide: no comfort during the PSU v FSU game, it was torture the whole way thru. Good night, and thanks for the chips.

I abide with my husband even though he has reached his limit of me trying to abide. (read my post and you will understand...LOL)

Doug The Una said...

Dddragon, the Orange Bowl was brutal for me and I'm new to Penn State boosterism.

Day by Day, I just read it. You are due some indulgence, I think.
