Symbol

SYMBOLIC, adj. Pertaining to symbols and the use and interpretation of symbols.
They say 'tis conscience feels compunction;
I hold that that's the stomach's function,
For of the sinner I have noted
That when he's sinned he's somewhat bloated,
Or ill some other ghastly fashion
Within that bowel of compassion.
True, I believe the only sinner
Is he that eats a shabby dinner.
You know how Adam with good reason,
For eating apples out of season,
Was "cursed." But that is all symbolic:
The truth is, Adam had the colic.
—G.J.
2007 Update: Poetic, obscure, non-binding.

Symbolic: The intrinsic value of being first to post on Doug's blog every day.

Grrr, Minka! Lies awake throughout Iceland's entire 18-hour winter night, just to be first here at Doug's...

OK, ok, I'm over it now.

I could have been first today....

Damned Metamucil.

SYMBOLIC, n. Making a joyful noise at the temple. Hey, didn't this guy David lead sacred processions in Jerusalem with dancing and clashing symbols?

Hey. I was first to get that pun out of the way. You oughta thank me.

SYMBOLIC LOGIC: A system of universal clarification of thought, couched in characters that are accessible to nobody.

symbol - a musical device designed to bring unwanted attention upon oneself in a manner that guarantees that the attention will last a very, very long time.

non-binding. [guffaws]

Well, I guess I got an education this morning. I thought symbolic had something to do with not sticking your tongue out while playing the symbols.

Well, now I can relate...as I am Symbolist. *_*

Symbolic: so, let me get this straight...sometimes a banana is just a banana?

The non-binding part is so important. A political elastic waistband ... xoxo

A picture of a dog is Doug's symbol.

Way too obscure for me.

qyrlzpri: Symbolizing nothing.

Minka, the penguin is a pretty new replacement for bears and lions and such, symbolic of imperialism.

Mule, I'm sure you weren't the first.

Haha, Al. You're supposed to take that when you aren't in a hurry.

Puppybrose, good idea. Let's vent our emoticons today.

Amoeba, thank you. And a good definition to boot.

Poobah, we spend our lives avoiding the attention we covet, don't we?

Quilly, I think it has something to do with spelling.

You certainly are, Ollie.

Not if you get it straight, Mutha.

Haha, Mireille. Yep, good for the trampoline and the buffet.

TLP, well come visit and you'll see the meaning.

Symbolic: something that is what it ain't, except when it is.

Giving meaning to the essentially meaningless.

Doug -- all spelling is symbolic. For that matter all words are symbolic. You didn't really want to push that button -- I don't think I can synthesize all 12 of my lingustics classes in this little box.

Puppy, ceci n'est pas un repondre.

So, it's a promotion, Mistress?

No, Quill, but I did want to clang that cymbal.

Words aren’t only symbolic;
They’re full of vitriolic.
They cut like a knife,
And lead to much strife.
They make me melancholic.

comme un cigare, une banane, et un canard, qui était mon point, en un mot(ish).

Totally Doug.

I remember when Prince wanted to be known as that ridiculous symbol. Then he changed and went back to being Prince.

You can make an "L" with your fingers and hold it to your forehead as a symbol for "Loser." Not YOU in particular, of course. By you, I meant any old loser out there that might happen to read this comment.

We, with our avatars, are all expressing symbolism.

Goldennib, I see the limericist has become the limericee. Keep it up!

Clair comme le lune, Madame Puppy!

Yeah, Actonbell, and wasn't he an example?

I thought so, Mistress.

Jamie Dawn, I'll pass that along to any loser who deigns to talk to me.

True, enough, batlady!
