ENVELOPE, n. The coffin of a document; the scabbard of a bill; the husk of a remittance; the bed-gown of a love-letter.
2008 Update: The portion of correspondence reliably addressed to the reader. The envelope is largely and increasingly absent from modern communication as, consequently, are readers.

ENVELOPE n. the bulk of the pile of debris at the edge of my coffee table.
Envelope Trivia: most envelopes are born fully grown by cesarean section. No antiseptic is used and the mother is often sacrificed during the ritual.
I like to push the envelope.
i'll envelope you any day, dawg (with a little help from my 10 arms)
ejqoua: edgy chihuahua
envelope: why does steaming one open come to mind? I swear that I never did that myself, but now my friend Lisa in 7th grade...
Your update is excellente!
My mom received an invitation to a wedding in India (one of her almond clients). The envelope is a gorgeous, rich, gold color, and the invitation itself is exquisite. She gave it to Courtney, and both the envelope & invitation are displayed in her bedroom like a work of art.
Seriously, just that envelope had to cost a fortune.
Envelop, the dress of good news, bad news and money. God's messengers don't use it.
Karma, TEN??
An envelope envelops a letter. Could be a "Dear John" letter. What a revolting envelopment that would be.
Expensive components in a print shop, because they have to be diecut and constructed ... who would guess that the externals of correspondence, so easily tossed, are worth that much. xoxo
Envelope -- meant for transmitting private correspondence in older days, similar to the modern e-mail.
Envelope -- as opposed to the more open and public correspondence in the olden days which used instead the postcard. I.e.the postcard was similar to the modern day blog.
..
JJ, I'd only lose it.
Quilly so the natural parents of the envelope are Banquo and Aphrodite? I'll buy that.
Where, Ice?
Karma, you grew a new pair?
Thanks, G. I'm sure you were a perfect angel who understand that the FBI investigates mail tampering.
JD, it was worth it if it made art on C's wall.
Ariel, that's what I wish I'd said.
A revolting envelopment, indeed, TLP!
I wouldn't have, Mireille, if you're counting.
Jim, good observation.
Envelope: The temporary veil of knowledge.
Envelope: The thing I sent to the IRS sans the actual tax return.
Terry, all the wisdom's in the veil, usually.
Cooper, I'm sure they feel good that you were thinking of them.
Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow, Actonbell?
