Evanescence

EVANESCENCE, n. The quality that so charmingly distinguishes happiness from grief, and enables us to make an immediate comparison between pleasure and pain, for better enjoyment of the former.

2006 Update: A tendency toward evaporation. The universal condition of eternal truths, absent from error.

I know it is a name of a band, but that about covers my knowledge on this subject. Google, here I come!
I´ll be back and upsie...I am first.
What do ye know?! *grins*

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! WHY HERMANA WHY??? It's what came to mind with moi!

Well, I was gonna say that it would not the same without Amy Lee's fab voice... and she has electric eye too! Sizzlin'!

But I guess that I can no longer say that! *sigh*

WHAT TO DO??????'

Minka said...

oh...the band is from Little Rock, Arkansas, USA.

Little Rock makes me smile :)

so Doug: with today´s word are you mentally preparing us for your evaporation in a couple of days? Don´t worry you´ll fade out of our memory by December 2ond. And by the time you get back, nobody will remember that you disspeared once. We will have abandoned you and you´ll be all alone, your comment sections will have vanished...

you sure you wanna test this theory :)

I think we all wanted to talk about the band today... sigh, and I was so hoping to be the one to get that in there... oh well. There are times that I wish I could just disappear... oh wait, I do. ;)

Evanescence: That state of euphoria brought on by extended laughter; usually accompanied by the snarfling of sparkling water out one's nostrils.

Doug -- what Minka said ....

evanescence a trick often played by my attention span these days

evanescence: Like the tenure of most rock bands; see also "fame is fleeting."

Sorry, the band was my first reference as well. Only other use of the word ever in my world was this week's quote from the wise and wonderful Dalai BoBo.

Mo'a said...

That was fast, the word did facinate you....was it yesterday?
I am fading away...shall reappear for the clever one line response :)

Anonymous said...

hah!

see? i *knew* this word had good Biercean potential. (believe it or not, after you asked about the word evanescence yesterday, i came thisclose to posting a video by the band Evanescence today.)

for some reason, evanescense makes me think of this:

"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."

- Gatsby F.S.F.

Doug, what's this talk of leaving? You get me hooked, then bail? Hm? Minka's good...but this talk of Little Rock has me worried.

Evanescence: C'mon downtown to Wall Street and watch this happen to your pension fund.

TLP said...

WTF? I commented earlier and now it has disappeared! Like the morning mist. It was the very best comment ever. Perfect. I was first, of course. I won't bother re-posting it. You can trust me on this.

Mornign all!

Evanescence - my state of mind today. Very fleeting. Maybe another cup of tea? Perhaps a nap? Ah, to hell with it all! D :(

Evanescence?

I had to look this up. It really is something other than a band. Huh.

Out of sight outta mind I guess.

Anonymous said...

Why Doug!!! Thank you so much for remarking on my evanescence glow. I didn't know you could see it from there.

Evanescence: the fadeful blow to fame, fortune, and/or inflated ego.

No definition today. Just an opinion...

Evanesence is the band fronted by a gal who is always at least a tad perturbed who sometimes comes off as whiney. She really should take a lesson in angry music from Linkin Park, the band who happen to be one of my favorites and who, coincidently, joined with Evanesence in 'Bring Me To Life'.

Minka, some things never fade and never lose steam.

Miz B, somehow I never worry you won't have a comment.

Minka, you sure know how to say "Bon Voyage." Actually I picked this word because I learned it yesterday at Puppytoes' and I checked Bierce before Webster.

Solace, I'm the only one who didn't about this band, aren't I? Maybe I should get back to my abacus.

Brian, effervescence is similar, and a good way to laugh.

Quill, I think there's such a thing as "blogger's focus."

Joel, that's where I learned it.

Yup, Mo'a yesterday, and you're steady as a rock. I'm smart like a stone. We make a great team.

You asked for it, a command performance, Puppy.

Mule, there's been a post up on this site every monday through saturday since Feb 28, 2005. The streak ends Friday. I'll be back on the 14th and O Ceallaigh will host the same game in the interim.

Al, I can watch it happen at the local vet.

TLP, I'll buy what with your birthday right around the corner.

Morning, Diane, either way enjoy the trip.

Yeah, yeah, Jenna, ok, it's a band. I didn't get the memo. I never said I was cool.

Dewy, you'd be surprised how far off you can be seen.

Puppybrose, in other words every day's commute.

Sar, it's the name of a band you say?

Even dogs deserve a break no and then.

Anonymous said...

dude. HERE.

now you know as much about this band as i do. stop your whining.

Anonymous said...

oh thank God, usually follow MizzyB and never remember what I was going to say.

Isn't it a new brand of sparkling water sold at pricey restaurants only?

Doug, you definition is so sad. Feel like crying almost

dddragon said...

Wasn't there a 7-Up commercial about 30 years ago that used this word?

Minka said...

That word and vunerable are two of teh most difficult to pronounce in my foreign mind...I am so glad the comment section is silent :)

Anonymous said...

What makes him Evan.

Sorry, but it is. Doug and friends, you are all invited to partake in the Lamest Contest Ever. Hurry, as time is fleeting.

Mutha said...

Triple-D, I remember that 7-Up commercial. Picture a close-up of that upside-down coke glass filled with the clear soda and all it's bubbles!
EVANESCENCE: A quality the month of November possesses.

Mo'a said...

LOL.... :) You are as smart as a whip. Perhaps it should be smarts like a whip?
I don't know what that means....heard it somewhere.

Kyahgirl said...

I don't think a person can improve on dear Ambrose's definition today.

I'm thinking if I'd tried though it would be something like:
Evanescence = Minka

Anonymous said...

Evanescence-Oh, I get a big kick from champagne.

Doug The Una said...

Thanks, Quill. Now that Miss Quilly approved my vacation, I can start looking for tickets.

Thanks, Puppybrose. Tears are all dry.

Pia, my definition was tailormade to support moral relatives like yourself. Cheer up.

Dddragon, was that effervescence?

Minka, for my Argentine step-sister it's "vegetable." So the bright side is a German just has to be strong and sturdy while an Argentine has to take vitamin supplements.

Diesel, that indescribable something that makes an Evan an Evan. Thought provoking. Sounds like my kind of contest.

Mutha, is that the crisp and clean with no caffeine one?

Mo'a, then you're as whimsical as a switch.

Kyah, I think you're stuck on effervescent if I take your point, in which case I agree.

Actonbell, don't think I'm going to do a post on Cole Porter now.

Minka said...

Kyah, why...where am I disspearing to? I just need to know, so I know what types of clothes to pack, oh please let it be sunny!

Anonymous said...

Aw, you're no fun.

Mutha said...

Doug: Ooo it might be. The effect ad execs have on my memory is pretty scary. I wonder what I could do with all the space my mind has filled with commercial jingles and catchy sayings?

*sigh*

Miz BoheMia said...

Evanescence... could it be the road to happiness? Oh how I wish to evanesce on outta here dammit!

Anonymous said...

damn, Mireille, that was a good one! wish i'd thought of it.

and Miz B? girlfriend, you *do* have the evanescence to get outta Spain, all you need now is money! ("details", right?)

Miz BoheMia said...

Hear ye, hear ye oh wise Puppybrose de mi corazón! I am afraid the money had been evanescing outta my hands since we landed in these here shores!

Ay...

Damn details!

LeMas. said...

evanescence-isn't that the stuff that makes soda bubbly? I kid, I kid...
I was gonna say something about the band too...

Kyahgirl said...

see Doug, its the dog telepathy again. I don't need to comment because you already know what I'm thinking.

Yes, effervescent was what I was thinking. Minka, I don't want you to disappear anywhere! If you had dreams of evaporating out of Iceland to someplace warm, you are stuck with me-its a dream. Brrrr.

Doug The Una said...

Minka, I think you unpack to evanesce.

Actonbell, life is not all about fun!

Mutha, maybe add NaFebWriMo to your calendar?

Very good, Mireille. It's so nice to meet a woman who isn't afraid to look back.

Miz B, I'm surprised you haven't tried boiling already.

Masil, your restraint is appreciated whenever it cuts loose.

Kyah, it's like we share a single mind.

Anonymous said...

I love that word because I think of "poof", now I'm here, now I'm gone.

Mutha said...

Aaaak! I didn't make it to 50K in NaNoWriMo! *sniffle*
I am licky my wounds this week.

Mutha said...

licky? licking!

Doug The Una said...

And isn't that just like you, Alice?

Mutha, it's too many commercials. 50k's just a number, when can we look for the 20k or 25k or 40?

Evanesence: A band that I sometimes enjoy listening to, and a condition that it sounds like it would be good for a story to have but it probably really wouldn't be.
