Ceres' in the knight time

A farm's a place for heroic yeomen,
For robust women and hired nomen,
For mighty oxen, fearsome cows,
Busy bees and ripping plows,
For beavers building by the lagoon
And yapping dogs who die too soon,
And horses proud and obsolete
And tractors roaring in the heat
And wildcats stalking out their pray
And owls calling end of day.

But in that wide diversity
Of virtues far beyond the city,
The hero all his fellows follow
Is the scarecrow, piked, pecked and hollow.

LEADERSHIP, n. A novel complaint. Avant-garde grief.

But, Dawg, everybody knows what would happen if the scarecrow only had a brain ...

Did you see them?
When did they pass?
Which way did they go?
How fast were they going?
How many were there?
I must find them.
I am their leader.

A piece of news said ...

Is it rude to point out that Thom is good looking?

I came by to read and gawk:)
Nice poem.

I bet the only reason actonbell is gawking is because yesterday her mother said ...

"Gawk is an ugly sound. Don't make it".

Amoeba, I like the presidential chorus. Is that an OC original?

Poobah, it would be fun watching them choose a captain, recent events suggest.

TLP, pretty good idea as you approach Niagara.

Thom, that's ok. Followership is risky business anyway.

Gosh, Karen, I hate to see what someone wrote privately on a blog dragged out into public.

Thanks, A-bell. I'm gawkin' write back.

Kids today, huh, Karen?

Is that an OC original?

Um, no. I've tracked "I must follow them ..." to 1848, and the whole passage to my postdoctoral advisor in 1980. I don't know if anyone else has attributed it to our nation's / corporation's Presidents.
