Expectation

EEXPECTATION, n.  The state or condition of mind which in  the procession of human emotions is preceded by hope and followed by despair.

2007 Update:  The pastoral battlefield in which the unknown overrun the forgotten, where fools become officers and wise men, cowards.

...and TLP is first.

It was not my expectation to be first.

expectation,n.: setting a trap for yourself, thank goodness for human conditioning...you might be smart enough to bring a rope!

EXPECTATION, n. The pile of spit at the ... No, sorry, that's EXPECTORATION. Kindly hold the applause.

Take 2.

EXPECTATION: The spritely, gilded inscription over the smiley face at the sun-flooded Gateway to Tomorrow, which, when translated, reads Abandon hope, all ye who enter here.

Expection: Trust. I asked to be first today, and I was. ;P

Thanks blogson.

Expectations spoil the surprise.

TLP said...

Expection is a cross between faith and experience, with a touch of superstition thrown in. I think it was Mark Twain who said (something like)if an animal touches a hot stove, it won't touch it again. But then, it won't touch a cold one either.

I could google to snare the correct quote, but I expect you to know it.

so fitting that this is the word the day before my children go back to school. They are full of expectation and it has immediately curdled to dread.

expectations? they're great

So hard to go after all these wise people with measured knowledge of expectations

My expectation last night was mundane. It was for the sun to come out this morning though the weather said it wouldn't

And it did

Joel, let's call you second first.

Minka, some days you shine with an inner darkness. Like dawn breaking on the other side of the world.

Icy, that is the last wisdom.

Divine comedy, Amoeba.

Pleasure, blogmama.

The converse also, Mo'a.

TLP, I guess it depends on how you like roast bear.

Mutha, from what I recall the secret is pulling away quick after you drop them off.

Karma, are you channeling Dickens or Tony the Tiger? It's a fine line, indeed.

Pia, expectation is the difference between an economist and a meteorologist. What binds them is being wrong.

My expectation, when I played the game was FAR DIFFERENT than what was delivered over at

Having trouble with my links - another expectation blown. I meant to say over at TOM & ICY's. The link is there - but is invisible.

TLP said...

Talk about expectations, I tried to click on tsduff's invisible link. Got nothin'. *crushed*

TLP, try clicking on the time stamp - of all things!

EXPECTATION i.
to anticipate a reality constructed of dreams built upon a foundation of hope.

Good comment, Icy.. or Tom. :-)

I LOVE this word!
I realize that if one's expectations are too high, it usually leads to disappointment. BUT!! I live my life expecting good things and knowing full well that bad things come along with them. AND!! Expecting good and focusing and enjoying the good and wonderful in life has made the bad parts sting less.
I'd rather live with expectation than defeat.

Expect a goooood day, Douglas!! :-)

happily, i did not wake up expecting to be clever, so i am neither disappointed and/or surprised to discover i've nothing to add to today's "discussion".

expectation~ The crushing weight that limits lifespans, constricts communication and ruins relationships.

Expectation: grand illusion confined to thought bubbles.

OMG! Tsduff is correct. you can click on the 10:24 AM time stamp and get to Icy's place!

I expect that Tsduff is the most clever person around. *I bow*

Poobah, I hope that works.

Terry, whatever trick Tom pulls is usually a grand one. I can't wait to see.

Sorry, TLP. The webmaster has limited liability.

Terry that worked and that's weird.

Quilly, I guess If you're gonna build your house on a foundation of sand, don't make the walls out of water.

I will, JD. Expect a truffle.

Neva, Calvin is my guru.

Logo, that's just the blanket.

Neva, is that why they float?

TLP, that's why I quote her evermore.

TLP - Crows can sometimes achieve beyond one's expectations. Even their own. Hop up now.

Doug - My favorite quote is: "The truest things are said in jest". Surely you jest.

Sorry, your expectation that I'd recognize the title below was wrong*. It wasn't exactly an expectation, I know, but I took your word and shook it all around and don't know what to do with a teen, a taxi, and a cop. Expectations for an interesting story are high.

*Pray, tell! Does it have something to do with Monty Python?

Expectation- A state or condition of mind adaptable and unique to the wearer... if misused, a blueprint for disappointment but if handled wisely it is the necessary foundation for dreams come true!

I REFUSE to be cynical!

Jim said...

Expectation -- I'm thinking I will be the last to comment today.

Also reminded me of Great Expectations, book by Charles Dickens. But Karma hinted that first.

Doug said...

I do, Terry. No lie.

Actonbell, Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote a very funny short story called "The handsomest drowned man in the world" which was included in his collection, Leaf Storms. I kind of assume that everything I've read, you've read. But you should read Leaf Storms if you haven't and then "Chronicle of A Death Foretold. You put the cop in the cab of taxi, the teen in the trunk and then drive your own car without a care.

Sar, I thought you might be around to gloat. Mangia!

Jamie Dawn, the secret to all of life is setting the bar on two bricks and then laying down to see how high it is.

Hermana, soy el perro. Tu puedes la lorra sere. ("cynic" fui la palabra por perro, lo sabes?)

Jim, there goes another rubber tree.

Expectation: the opposite of what will happen.

Doug said...

Mireille, first in your heart is the head of a long line.

Indie, so an expectation is a unit of error and an error a piece of plan. Sounds right.

to correct Bierce (just a tad):

Expectation: The state or condition of the mind, which in the procession of human emotions is preceded by hope and followed by... d'oh!
