Expectation
EEXPECTATION, n. The state or condition of mind which in the procession of human emotions is preceded by hope and followed by despair.
2007 Update: The pastoral battlefield in which the unknown overrun the forgotten, where fools become officers and wise men, cowards.
EXPECTATION, n. The pile of spit at the ... No, sorry, that's EXPECTORATION. Kindly hold the applause.
Take 2.
EXPECTATION: The spritely, gilded inscription over the smiley face at the sun-flooded Gateway to Tomorrow, which, when translated, reads Abandon hope, all ye who enter here.
Expection is a cross between faith and experience, with a touch of superstition thrown in. I think it was Mark Twain who said (something like)if an animal touches a hot stove, it won't touch it again. But then, it won't touch a cold one either.
I could google to snare the correct quote, but I expect you to know it.
I LOVE this word! I realize that if one's expectations are too high, it usually leads to disappointment. BUT!! I live my life expecting good things and knowing full well that bad things come along with them. AND!! Expecting good and focusing and enjoying the good and wonderful in life has made the bad parts sting less. I'd rather live with expectation than defeat.
happily, i did not wake up expecting to be clever, so i am neither disappointed and/or surprised to discover i've nothing to add to today's "discussion".
"I find my life is a lot easier the lower I keep everyone's expectations." ~ Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes)
Expectation- A state or condition of mind adaptable and unique to the wearer... if misused, a blueprint for disappointment but if handled wisely it is the necessary foundation for dreams come true!
Actonbell, Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote a very funny short story called "The handsomest drowned man in the world" which was included in his collection, Leaf Storms. I kind of assume that everything I've read, you've read. But you should read Leaf Storms if you haven't and then "Chronicle of A Death Foretold. You put the cop in the cab of taxi, the teen in the trunk and then drive your own car without a care.
Sar, I thought you might be around to gloat. Mangia!

so fitting that this is the word the day before my children go back to school. They are full of expectation and it has immediately curdled to dread.

Mireille, first in your heart is the head of a long line.
Indie, so an expectation is a unit of error and an error a piece of plan. Sounds right.

Expectation: The state or condition of the mind, which in the procession of human emotions is preceded by hope and followed by... d'oh!
