Settling in for winter

The skies and trees change as expected,
But other seasons are directed
By voters, pols and other fellows,
Pounding wood and squeezing bellows,
To tarry until properly elected.

A new day, like a river, came,
And though we'd prefer each one were tame
Each one arrives in its due course
And is tracked back to its likely source
To dam and damn and blame.

The best that we can do, I think,
Is pour ourselves a nice warm drink,
Build a fire to heat our feet,
Take a slice of something sweet,
And rest a bit, at home upon the brink.

BARREL, n. A fashion deplored for reflecting effort rather than ambition.

Barrel: Could be fun. Roll it out.

I agree with Ariel, good advice in your poem.

BARREL, n. Last-ditch attempt by a member of the formerly middle class to protect the neighbors from exposure. Now obsolete: see HEFTY BAG.

Well-done verse today (I hope that doesn't apply to your feet as well). Worth awaiting.

Terrific poem, especially the dam and damn part.

Barrel: Supposedly there are people who've gone over Niagara Falls in a barrel and survived to tell the tale.
They are even more mindless than I am, but they've got a much better story to tell than I do, so bravo to them! Those who did not survive the barrel ride over the falls did not get a chance to tell the tale of their ride.

Barrels?

Do they contain wine?

Barrel: the business end of a six-shooter.

I like your poem, it will be good for a nice rainy wintry day in our Houston area. If it's cold enough there might be an icicle on the eave.

Ummm, a hot buttered rum sounds More to my liking
Curl up with a book
With warm fire after hiking

Just leave all the politics
Worry and fret
To those whose more innardly
Needs are not met

Give in to the need for
A big slice of pie
Relax in the hope
That our nation won't die

We really are one
Whether we know it or not
All striving together
... all in the same Lot.

So clasp arms on shoulders
And rally together
Just lots of good people
All birds of a feather

I'm off to get out my accordian
to play Roll out the Barrel. It seems appropriate.

ps: laughing at the visual of Doug in a barrel... ha ha ha ha

Barrel: What the auto industry is over. Future vehicle for many?

I'll have that drink around cocktail time; I'm fiddling too.

Ariel, there must be a Hungarian adage with which mothers give the same advice.

TLP, the polka really sinks in, doesn't it?

Haha, Amoeba. My feet I keep medium.

Yeah, JD. Turns out to be a pretty widespread habit.

Depends, Jenn. Did you drink some?

Jim, we used to have snow in Santa Clarita.

Actonbell, the only rule is never drink so much you forget how to get more.

Anonymous, in my case the space goes for $5/acre.

Terry, do you really have an accordion? Will Bear accompany on washboard?

Weirsdo, I think the future vehicle will be a Toyota.

Yes, she has! I can hardly wait to hear her playing.

I actually did pull the red machine out and play the Beer Barrel Polka last night... my music put the Bear to sleep.

Very nicely done Doug.
Over or under doesn't matter it's usually full of pork, and I dislike meat.

Something about that last sentence left a sinking feeling
It was however a wonderful poem
