Libertine

LIBERTINE, n.  Literally a freedman; hence, one who is in bondage to his passions.

2008 Update:  Any man freer with his hand than with his opinion.

Reminds me of a sailor I once knew....

Libertine: deplorably dissipated and degraded. Of course some people like that in a man. Just sayin'. Not me of course.

I am not going to touch the 2008 definition. I am not...I am going to behave...

Seems to be a naughty word/definition week around here.

I like it!

When I was 8 our family was traveling through Europe and stopped in Florence. My father came back from a stroll and said "Good God, they've transformed the opera house into some kind of X-rated movie theater. They're showing THE CAREER OF THE LIBERTINE!"
Some time later he struck himself on the forehead and said "OH! It's THE RAKE'S PROGRESS!"
We saw and enjoyed it. A former student of his was playing the auctioneer.

Wow Doug. García Marquez himself would be proud of your definition!

Sadly for many there are few if any libertines in DC today

TLP, some do like that in a man. Usually other sailors.

Jenn, why do I think you'd say the same if today's word had been "lion?"

Great story, Weirsdo.

Ariel, you are no libertine.

That's because they're all in New York, Pia.

Libertine: reminds me of velveteen, like The Velveteen Rabbit, Dr. Seuss book.

Libertine: and it does sort of rhyme with velveteen, please say it does.

Libertine: a man free enough to ruin his life then free enough to unruin it; live and let live

libertine- those that defined the term in the first place! Who decides who are libertines and who are not?

Sometimes I'm a libertine and poop close to the house, but that's because I'm scared of the dark.

LIBERTINE, n.. First-year college student (I was going to say "freshman", but they're extinct; in today's classroom, only the women are paying any attention, maybe).

Sorry, but I've not been much fun lately. I keep thinking about current events, and how different they would have been but for a blue dress. Speaking of libertines.

Jim, it does anyway and if it didn't, who would be offended?

JD, you make it sound like a good thing. Thank you.

Great point, AmhsiraK. I don't think the Libertine Police are a big force.

It's true, Coop. I think you have to be about half ugly to get away with it.

JD, hussy!

Seems to me, Icy, if you're paying attention to where you poop, Master Tom can too.

I'd have made the same choice, Bear. And also with you.

I haven't been much fun lately, either, Amoeba, and I don't even own a blue dress.
